At the Made by Google event earlier this year, Google unveiled “Help me edit”, a new AI-powered feature that enabled users to edit images using natural language. However, it was only available on the Pixel 10 series devices.
In a blog post, Google has announced that the new Gemini AI-powered conversational image editing capability is now available to all Android users. To give you a quick recap, the functionality makes it easy for Google Photos users to make edits by offering “AI-powered suggestions that combine multiple effects”, eliminating the need to choose tools or adjust sliders.
Since it can understand natural language, users can simply type or use voice commands to tell Google Photos how they want the photo to look. For example, you can ask for things like “remove the cars in the background” or “restore this old photo”, and the app will automatically understand what you want to do.
In case the original prompt isn’t satisfactory, you can also add follow-up instructions after each edit. Apart from modifying images, Help me edit can also add or remove objects, insert people, change the background, and do other things.
1. To use the new Help me edit feature, simply open Google Photos on your device and open the image you want to edit.
2. Now, tap on the “Help me edit” button in the bottom corner, and the app will show you a bunch of prompts like “remove background clutter” or “focus more on the subject.”
3. In case the prompt you want to enter isn’t there, type one in the text field or use voice to tell Gemini what you want to do.
4. Once done, Gemini will process your prompt and make changes to the images.
One thing to note here is that any image edited using this feature will have a C2PA “Edited with AI tools” label. The new Google Photos “Help me edit” feature is currently rolling out for eligible Android devices in the United States, but there is currently no word on when it will be available to everyone.
