Elon Musk-led X (formerly Twitter) recently updated its privacy policy to indicate that the social media platform will soon allow “third-party collaborators” to train their AI models on your posts.
According to X, the new privacy policy will come into effect on November 15, allowing X to generate more revenue. Earlier this year, Reddit struck a similar deal with Google that enabled the internet giant to use posts from the platform to train its AI models and improve online search results.
In the image below, you can see that X says that users will be able to opt out of the setting. While the link embedded in the privacy policy takes users to account settings, there is currently no option to opt out of data sharing. However, since the new privacy policy won’t come into effect until next month, there’s a chance that the platform will add a toggle that lets you opt out.
Currently, X has an option that lets users stop data sharing with xAI’s Grok and “other business partners”, but the company says that these business partners use your data to “run and improve its products.”
According to TechCrunch. X also removed the paragraph which said that it stores “profile information and content for the duration of your account” and another one which stated that the company keeps “personally identifiable data we collect when you use our products and services for a maximum of 18 months.”
These clauses are now replaced by a text that says “different types of information for different periods of time, depending on how long we need to retain it in order to provide you with our products and services.” This might mean X can indefinitely store your information and use it later, even if you stopped using the service.
