Yahoo’s older version of Messenger will no longer be available for users after August 5, it announced in a blog post. According to the blog post, the company is making the decision to streamline its services and focus on its strength.
“At the start of 2016, we outlined a plan for streamlining the business and focusing on our strengths across seven core consumer products: Mail, Search, Tumblr, News, Sports, Finance and Lifestyles,” the Yahoo blog post reads.
Yahoo Messenger app was launched in 1998. The company, however revamped the older Messenger app with a new version in December 2015. “This complete revamp brings users an incredibly fast, beautiful and smart way to send – and unsend – messages, photos and animated GIFs in 1:1 and group conversations,” according to the blog post.
Yahoo has asked users to update to the new Messenger by August 5, as they will not be able to access their chats after that. “We intend to continue our focused efforts on the new Messenger, with a goal of delivering the best experience to our users,” the blogpost says.
The company has announced it will also discontinue Yahoo Recommends, a personalised widget service, from September 1.
