WhatsApp, the popular instant messaging platform with more than a billion users in India is working on new chat themes. The upcoming feature will not only let you customise chat windows, but also includes a bunch of preset themes that you can use to alter the look of your conversation.

Spotted by WABetaInfo, the publication that keeps a tab on upcoming WhatsApp features, the custom chat themes are currently available on WhatsApp v2.24.20.12 beta for Android. According to Android Authority, who managed to activate some of these themes, said that there are a bunch of colour presets to choose from, but only some could be activated.

However, when the feature rolls out to everyone, users will be able to choose from a wide range of wallpapers, which will also accent the chat bubbles. Also, it looks like WhatsApp will also allow users to set the darkness levels when switching from light to dark mode or vice versa.

Since these are default chat themes, the one you select will apply to all your chats, however, WhatsApp might let you choose certain themes for select chats. Another thing to note here is that unlike Instagram, these themes will only be visible to you.

Currently, the new default chat themes are under development and the feature is expected to roll out sometime in the future. Recently, Meta gave us a glimpse of how WhatsApp and Messenger users will be able to send messages and place calls to other apps. The upcoming feature is part of Meta’s efforts to adhere to the European Union’s Digital Markets Act, which requires messaging platforms to support interoperability with other apps.
