Twitter is planning to remove the ‘Like’ button, The Telegraph reports. As per the report, Twitter’s CEO Jack Dorsey said that the company is considering removing the heart-shaped button “soon.”
The Telegraph cited that the company could likely remove the Like button so as to improve the ‘quality of debate’ on the social platform. Twitter has commented on the report saying that the company does not have any immediate plans to push changes and that they are “rethinking” about the service to ensure that they are “incentivizing healthy conversation.”
“As we’ve been saying for a while, we are rethinking everything about the service to ensure we are incentivizing healthy conversation, that includes the like button. We are in the early stages of the work and have no plans to share right now,” Twitter Comms post reads. Further, Twitter Comms VP Brandon Borrman in the thread cited that there is no “timeline” for changes and that it is not happening “soon.”

Twitter’s response of removing the like button to improve quality of conversation on the platform has invited criticism. The social media company has faced criticism for failing to address targeted harassment, and for ‘harbouring’ racist, sexist content. It is unclear how removing the Like button will clamp down on some of these problems.
Twitter introduced the Like button in 2015. The feature replaced “favourites,” a star-shaped button that enabled users to bookmark or read tweets later.
