In an attempt to crack down on spam and bots, Twitter is imposing daily limits on how many direct messages unverified accounts can send. The platform said the changes will take effect on Friday and will affect users who don’t have a verified badge or a Twitter Blue subscription.

The company did not reveal what the exact DM limit will be but suggested that users who want to send unlimited DMs will have to sign up for Twitter Blue, its paid service that costs Rs 900 per month in India and offers various features and perks.

This is the latest move by Twitter owner Elon Musk, who acquired the platform in 2022 after a fierce bidding war, to tackle the spam and bot problem that has plagued Twitter for years, among other things. Musk has famously declared that he will “defeat the spam bots or die trying!”

Last week, Twitter introduced a new DM setting where messages from users who you follow will arrive in your primary inbox, and messages from verified users who you don’t follow will be sent to your message request inbox. And earlier, the company introduced rate limits — temporary restrictions on the number of tweets users can view every day. This was announced following what looked like an outage that affected users across the globe.

Twitter said the new DM limits and settings are meant to “reduce spam in Direct Messages” but people are already accusing the company of using DMs as a way to force users to pay for Twitter Blue.
