During Google Cloud Next ‘24, the company announced new Gemini AI integrations for r its BigQuery enterprise data warehouse product, Looker business intelligence platform and Google Cloud databases.

Gemini for BigQuery and Looker

The company says that BigQuery is now a unified AI-ready data platform with support for multimodal data, multiple serverless processing engines with streaming and data governance baked in to support the whole data-to-AI lifecylce. It also introduced new BigQuery integrations with Gemini models in Vertex AI supporting multimodal analytics, vector embeddings, and fine-tuning of LLMs from within BigQuery, which customers can apply to their enterprise data.

Google also says that Gemini in BigQuery will allow AI-powered data preparation, analysis and engineering, along with intelligent recommendations to optimise your data workloads. Gemini will also help in Looker, allowing business users to “chat” with their enterprise data and generate visualisations and reports. Those features will be powered by the Looker semantic data model that is seamlessly integrated into Google Workspace.

These features are already available to many enterprise customers. According to Google, Snap Inc., which runs Snapchat, uses these new capabilities to “converge toward a common data and AI platform with multiple engines that work across a single copy of data.”

Gemini for Google Cloud databases

Google Cloud databases will also be getting new generative AI integrations. The company specifically pointed to three AI-assisted experiences that it says will help analysts become more productive.

Code development with Database Studio

Database Studio is Google’s rich SQL editor that can be found in the Google Cloud Console. It will now let developers easily generate, summarise and fix SQL code with intelligent code assistance, code completion, and guidance directly in the editor, which the company claims could improve application development productivity.

Fleet management for Database Center

Google claims operators can now manage an entire fleet of databases from a “single pane of glass.” The intelligent dashboards on Dabase Center can proactively access your availability, data protection, security and compliance posture. Database teams can use natural language to interact with databases to find the information need. There is also a new LLM-powered conversational agent that can generate troubleshooting tips tailored to the users’ specific requirements.

Database Migration Service

Gemini can now be used to look at and convert code in databases, such as stored procedures, triggers and functions, to the PostgreSQL dialect. Google says that the Gemini-powered database migration plans focus on explainability with side-by-side comparison of dialects and detailed explanations of the code and recommendations, to help upskill and retrain SQL developers.

Assisted migrations with Database Migration Service: With the help of Gemini, you can examine and convert database-resident code such as stored procedures, triggers, and functions, to the PostgreSQL dialect. Additionally, to help upskill and retrain SQL developers, Gemini-powered database migration plans focus on explainability, with side-by-side comparison of dialects, along with detailed explanations of the code and recommendations.
