(Image Source: Zoom Earth)Cyclone Ditwah LIVE Location Tracker: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) Monday said that the storm has weakened into a deep depression and will remain nearly stationary as a weakened system for the next 24 hours. However, several parts of Tamil Nadu—including Chennai, Thiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Cuddalore, and Ranipet—continued to receive rainfall due to the remnants of Cyclonic Storm Ditwah.
The IMD has issued a red warning for the coastal districts of Cuddalore, Chennai, Puducherry, and parts of Andhra Pradesh. Extremely heavy rain is likely over the next 24 hours, especially in districts such as Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Thanjavur, Chengalpattu, and Ranipet. Winds could gust up to 80 kmph, and the IMD has advised fishermen to avoid sea travel until conditions improve.
The storm left a trail of destruction across Sri Lanka, triggering widespread rainfall and landslides, which as of Sunday is known to have claimed at least 334 lives, with 330 still missing, local disaster management authorities said. India has deployed assistance for ongoing rescue and relief operations there.
The IMD often alerts people hours or days before impact, but unfortunately, the agency does not have a real-time cyclone tracker. However, one can use third-party services like Windy and Zoom Earth, which focus on showing the severity and trajectory of storms along with wind speeds.
As the storm approaches, the IMD has already issued heavy to very heavy rainfall over the northern parts of Tamil Nadu till December 1, with extremely heavy rains expected on November 29 and November 30.
In the bulletin, the agency said cyclone Ditwah has strengthened and is expected to hit the southwest Bay of Bengal, affecting the northern coasts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and the southern parts of Andhra Pradesh in the early hours of Sunday. At the Puducherry port, cyclone warning signal number two has been issued as Ditwah moves closer. This signal is used to alert ships and vessels to remain cautious when a cyclone, which forms over the sea, causes wind speeds of 60-90 kmph.
Also, severe waterlogging has been reported in several parts of Toothukudi. While many roads and neighbourhoods are already submerged, the place is expected to see another spell of heavy rain.
Ahead of the cyclone, fishermen have now been warned against going into the sea, while farmers have been asked to take necessary precautions. In a statement to PTI, the Puducherry district collector A Kulothungan advised the public not to stand under trees, lamp posts and old buildings.
In case of an emergency, people can call 1077, 1070, 112, or connect with the Disaster Management Authority via WhatsApp on 9488981070 for guidance and preventive measures. The NDRF has also deployed eight teams from Arakkonam to Puducherry, which are accompanied by four search and rescue dogs.
