The upstart tech brand Nothing has launched its most affordable smartphone yet, the Phone 2a, and it’s aiming at redefining what you can expect from a budget Android device. With price starting from Rs 23,999, the Phone 2a packs some serious heat under the hood while retaining Nothing’s iconic transparent design.

At its core is the MediaTek Dimensity 7200 ‘Pro’ chip, which was co-engineered with Nothing. This 4nm processor, Nothing claims, is 13% faster than the original Nothing Phone 1 while being 16% more efficient. Paired with up to a massive 12GB of RAM, this phone should handle most tasks you throw at it.

The 6.7-inch flexible AMOLED display reaches up to 1,300 nits peak brightness for easy outdoor visibility. This display is surrounded by super-slim symmetric bezels all around, which Nothing says is the slimmest on any of their handsets, coming in at just 2.1mm thick. Under the hood is Nothing’s biggest battery yet at 5,000mAh, which the brand says should allow up to 2 days of use per charge.

In the camera department, Nothing doubled down on sensors rather than going for a multi-cam setup. You get a 50MP main camera with OIS and a 50MP ultra-wide, both using high-quality sensors with huge 1/1.56″ and 1/2.76″ sizes respectively. Neat software tricks like Motion Capture, Night Mode, and the TrueLens Engine’s Ultra XDR should allow for consistently great shots.

The iconic Glyph Interface makes a return with a new trio light configuration on the back. It can visually signal incoming calls, and charging status, and even sync up with your music’s beat. Complementing the lights is a highly customised version of Android 14 dubbed Nothing OS 2.5.

Generative AI has come to Nothing Phones for the first time too with the ability to generate custom wallpapers right on the handset. Some of the other brands have pulled ahead with more utilitarian AI features but this is still a start.

While packing an impressive punch, the Phone 2a hasn’t lost sight of Nothing’s environmentally-conscious roots. The company says it boasts its lowest carbon footprint yet and contains recycled aluminum, tin, copper, and plastic.

With the affordable Phone 2a, Nothing is making a bold play to capture the budget segment through its unique combination of innovative design and software smarts. The Phone 2 apparently didn’t sell as well due to its high pricing so this new handset could help the brand recover any lost ground.

The Nothing Phone 2a starts at Rs 23,999 (8GB+128GB), but as part of an introductory offer, the handset can be picked up for just Rs 19,999 (inclusive of bank discounts) on March 12. Units will likely be limited though so you’ll have to be fast.

Besides the new handset, Nothing has also unveiled two new audio wearables – the CMF Buds selling for Rs 2,499, and the CMF Neckband Pro selling for Rs 1,999. Stay tuned for our review tomorrow for the duo.
