Xiaomi Redmi Note 4G: All you need to know about India’s cheapest 4G phone

This is the first time Xiaomi is selling its phones offline. Redmi Note 4G will retail at select Airtel stores.

While India was waiting for the Xiaomi Redmi Note, the Chinese startup surprised all by also launching a 4G version of its phablet on Monday. At Rs 9,999, the Redmi Note 4G is the cheapest LTE smartphone in India, even though this high-speed band is still a rare commodity in the country. The smartphone is expected to be available for registration by mid-December on Flipkart and Airtel stores.

How to buy?

Redmi Note 4G is Mi India’s very first 4G device which the company has specifically designed to suit India’s 4G network in partnership with Bharti Airtel. As part of the partnership, Redmi Note 4G will retail at select Airtel stores in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Chennai. These stores will have dedicated Mi zones for people to experience the phone.

This is the first time Xiaomi is selling its phones offline. But it is not completely offline, afterall Xiaomi prides itself as an e-commerce firm. So those who want to buy the Redmi Note 4G from Airtel stores will have to register at airtel(dot)com/mi On registration, buyers will get a date on which they can pick up the phone from the store.

People registering with Airtel will have to buy or transfer to a postpaid plan and will get a new USIM from Airtel. The Redmi Note 4G will be also available through the well-known flash sales on Flipkart without any 4G data plan. Registration for both mode of sale is expected to start by mid-December.

What if there’s no 4G in your city?

Redmi Note 4G is a dual band LTE phone which will work on both TDD-2300 MHz and FDD-1800 Mhz 4G frequency bands. In those cities where Airtel 4G is not available, the smartphone will work on 3G network and will be upgraded to 4G once available.

If you are buying from Airtel stores, then it is mandatory to get a new post-paid plan. Existing Airtel pre-paid cusomters will also have to shift to a post-paid plan. Existing post-paid customers will have to tweak their plan accordingly.

The Redmi Note 4G is completely unlocked and will work with other 4G service providers in future as well. If you are not sure about opting for 4G right now then you can buy it from Flipkart.

3G vs 4G version of Redmi Note

Both the models look the same and comes with an almost similar spec sheet. The 3G version of the phone is powered by an octa-core MTK 6592 1.7GHz processor from MediaTek, while the 4G version runs on a 1.6GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 MSM8928 processor.
Another difference is that the 3G version offers two SIM micro card slots -3G and 2G. On the other hand, the 4G version offers only one SIM card slot.

Both the Redmi Note models come with SwiftKey version 5.1 with 13 Indian languages and Fleksy gesture-based keyboard.
