Error 53: Apple says sorry, releases new update to fix bricked iPhones

Apple’s new response page for Error 53 notes, “After you try to update or restore your iOS device in iTunes on your Mac or PC, you might see error 53 in iTunes and “Connect to iTunes” on your device. Error 53 appears when a device fails a security test. This test was designed to check whether Touch ID works properly before the device leaves the factory, and wasn’t intended to affect customers.

For anyone who experienced error 53, Apple has released an update to iOS 9.2.1 to allow you to successfully restore your device using iTunes on your Mac or PC.”

According to TechCrunch, the update is not for users who update their iPhone over the air using iCloud, it is rather for users who use iTunes to update their iOS devices.

Apple also issued an apology to users and told TechCrunch,”We apologize for any inconvenience, this was designed to be a factory test and was not intended to affect customers. Customers who paid for an out-of-warranty replacement of their device based on this issue should contact AppleCare about a reimbursement.”

Apple has even issued a statement which reads, “If the check on Touch ID fails, your update won’t finish. You’ll see a Connect to iTunes screen on your device or a message like this in iTunes on your computer: The iPhone [device name] could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (53).”

At the end of all this saga, iPhone users can get their device working, but if they want to use touch ID then it is recommended to visit an authorised Apple service center.
