Apple’s iOS 18 will introduce a host of AI features on iPhones, backed by a large language model. A new report now suggests that the first set of AI features for iPhones will work on the device and won’t require cloud servers. Apple will unveil iOS 18 at WWDC 2024 on June 10, which is stated to be the biggest software update ever since the original iOS.
A report by Bloomberg stated, “As the world awaits Apple’s big AI unveiling on June 10, it looks like the initial wave of features will work entirely on the device. That means there’s no cloud processing component to the company’s large language model, the software that powers the new capabilities.”
It is also suggested that Apple will back some AI features using cloud computing, which might make use of third-party language models like Google’s Gemini, OpenAI’s GPT, or Baidu’s AI, depending on the market. The company is said to be in talks with the aforementioned brands for the possible integration of various AI models into the iPhone.
Right now, it is also said that iOS 18 might not come with a ChatGPT or Copilot-like chatbot. Instead, the company might integrate generative AI capabilities into some of the already available first-party apps to make them more efficient and add more functionality.
Apps and services like Siri, the Notes app, the Spotlight search tool, the Safari web browser, the Apple Music app, and more first-party services are likely to get supercharged by generative AI capability. Right now, it is also not sure if all the iPhones eligible for iOS 18 will gain new AI features or will be limited to the newer and upcoming models.
