
Qualcomm unveils its first set of chips designed for fanless handheld gaming consoles. Currently, the series has a total of three processors — Snapdragon G1 Gen 1, Snapdragon G2 Gen 1, and the Snapdragon G3x Gen 2, the most powerful of the lot.
The Snapdragon G1 Gen 1 is an entry-level processor with an octa-core Kryo CPU cluster along with an Adreno A11 graphics chip. This processor comes with an integrated network modem with support for Wi-Fi 5, and Bluetooth 5, and can support a 1080p display at 60fps.
The Snapdragon G2 Gen 1 is a slightly more capable system-on-chip (SoC) with a similar CPU cluster. However, it gets a more capable Adreno A12 GPU along with a Qualcomm FastConnect 6700 chip that offers Wi-Fi 6E and 5G connectivity. This processor can power consoles with up to FHD+ resolution with up to 144Hz refresh rate.
Lastly, the Snapdragon G3x Gen 2 also gets a Kryo-based octa-core CPU configuration, paired with Adreno A32 graphics with support for ray-tracing. With the Qualcomm FastConnect 7800 network processor, the Snapdragon G3x Gen 2 offers Bluetooth 5.3 and Wi-Fi 7.
Qualcomm has officially confirmed that the Razer Edge 5G, which is currently powered by the Snapdragon G3x Gen 1 is getting upgraded to the Snapdragon G3x Gen 2. Hand-held console brands like AyaNeo, Inventec, Huaqin, and Thundercomm are some of the prominent names that have joined forces with Qualcomm to launch Snapdragon G series-powered gaming consoles in the coming days.
