Just over a week after its January 19 early access launch, Palworld has already moved a jaw-dropping 19 million copies according to developer Pocketpair. The studio revealed that 12 million sales came from Steam while 7 million units were purchased on Xbox, making Palworld the biggest third-party launch in Game Pass history.
“The fan response has been incredible. To see millions of players around the world enjoying Palworld is just amazing,” said Pocketpair CEO Takuro Mizobe in an interview with Xbox Wire. “This is only the beginning for Palworld. The feedback we’re getting during early access will let us keep improving the experience across all platforms.”
Much of the buzz stems from Palworld’s unabashed borrowing of Pokémon themes and creatures, earning it the nickname “Pokémon with guns.” The similarities were striking enough to draw the attention of The Pokémon Company, which recently stated it was investigating whether Palworld infringed on its intellectual property and would “take appropriate measures.”
In addition to its record-breaking Xbox performance, Palworld logged the largest day one launch for a third party title on Xbox Cloud Gaming, which is included with Game Pass Ultimate subscriptions. For a period after launch, nearly 3 million daily active users made Palworld the most played game on Xbox.
The game is currently available in early access for $30, or free for Game Pass subscribers, on Xbox and PC. Cross-play, one of the community’s most requested features, is also slated for a future update according to the report.
