The wait is finally over. After years of speculation and anticipation, Rockstar Games has officially announced the release date for the first-ever trailer of their hotly anticipated next installment in the Grand Theft Auto series. Mark your calendars for December 5th at 9am ET, when fans will get their first real look at GTA 6 (7:30 pm IST).
Given the absolutely massive popularity of GTA 5, one of the most commercially successful video games in history, expectations are high for the upcoming sequel. Details have been kept tightly under wraps, but the scant official announcements so far, combined with some high-profile leaks over the past couple years, have many predicting that GTA 6 will take players back to the streets of Vice City. This has now been virtually confirmed by the fact that the image in the announcement features a Miami-like backdrop with palm trees.
Rockstar set fans’ minds racing back in February when they confirmed that development on GTA 6 was “well underway,” buried in an announcement about updates for GTA Online.
When leaked developmental footage found its way online a few months later, showing off an early build of Vice City along with a playable female protagonist, fans worked themselves into a frenzy picking apart each frame. Authorities eventually tracked down and arrested the alleged hacker responsible for the leak – a British teenager who had also infiltrated Uber.
In November, Rockstar announced a December window for the game’s first trailer saying: “We are very excited to let you know that in early December, we will release the first trailer for the next Grand Theft Auto. We look forward to many more years of sharing these experiences with all of you.
“Thanks to the incredible support of our players worldwide, we have had the opportunity to create games we are truly passionate about — without you, none of this would be possible, and we are so grateful to all of you for sharing this journey with us.
“In 1998, Rockstar Games was founded on the idea that video games could come to be as essential to culture as any other form of entertainment, and we hope that we have created games you love in our efforts to be part of that evolution.”
Now with the latest announcement, we have a proper release date.
