Remember Flappy Bird? The fun and frustrating game that required users to tap the screen to fly a pixelated version of a bird through green tubes, which look straight out of Mario is making a comeback.

Originally made by a Vietnam based developer named Dong Nguyen, the viral mobile game was pulled from both the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store in 2014, at a time when it was raking in thousands of dollars every day. While Nguyen did not reveal the exact reason why he removed the game from Android and iOS app stores, he blamed Flappy Bird for ruining his life.

As it turns out, a group of people who describe themselves as a “team of passionate fans committed to sharing the game with the world” say that they have acquired the right to Flappy Bird.

The group, which calls itself as “The Flappy Bird Foundation Group” says it purchased the official Flappy Bird trademark from Gametech Holdings LLC as well have the rights for Piou Piou vs. Cactus, the inspiration behind Flappy Bird’s character. However, it is still unclear whether Nguyen, the original creator of the game, is still associated with the upcoming version.

Flappy Bird’s comeback was announced on the flappybird.org website, where the new owners said that a “rehatched” version of the game will be available on Android and iOS sometime next year.

Compared to the original version, the website suggests that the upcoming version of Flappy Bird will bring a bunch of new characters like Peng the penguin and Quirky, a character with a rainbow coloured mohawk.

The developers are also working on an EZ mode (Easy mode), multiplayer challenges and a new rivals mode where players can challenge others. Another mode where players shoot birds through a basketball hoop is also underway.
