SanDisk has revealed the biggest SD card ever in terms of memory capacity. SanDisk's new prototype SDXC card has 1 terabyte of memory, maybe more than storage on your laptop. Western Digital, which owns the SanDisk brand, has not announced pricing or availability of the 1TB SDXC card but it shows the way forward for evolving storage needs. Just two years back, SanDisk has unveiled 512GB SDXC card which was the biggest storage option back then. With the new 1TB SDXC card, SanDisk is trying to cater to needs of high resolution content development. "Sixteen years ago we introduced the first SanDisk 64MB SD card and today we are enabling capacities of 1TB. Over the years our goal has remained the same; continue to innovate and set the pace for the imaging industry. The SanDisk 1TB SD card prototype represents another significant achievement as growth of high-resolution content and capacity-intensive applications such as virtual reality, video surveillance and 360 video, are progressing at astounding rates," said Dinesh Bahal, vice president, product management, Content Solutions Business Unit, Western Digital. The needs for data storage are evolving rapidly with more devices getting capable of shooting 4K content. From flagship smartphones to high-end cameras, all support 4K video recording. On the other end, the professional camera gear manufacturers like Red are already offering 6K video recording and availability of 8K sensor later this year, there is a need for a storage solution like this one. With 1TB SDXC card, SanDisk is aiming to help content creators deliver content in 4K, 8K and even add support for virtual reality with ease.
