Video: Samsung showcases 5.5-inch 4K display for VR

Samsung displayed a high resolution 4K screen for VR at the Display Week conference in San Francisco, CA. The Korean smartphone maker also showcased a number of other next-generation displays, but it was VR display that grabbed most attention.

The 5.5-inch 4K VR display has a resolution of 3840 x 2160 with pixel density of 860 ppi. Both Oculus Rift and HTC Vive feature a little over 2K display with a pixel resolution of 2160 x 1200.

Samsung has not made any official announcement on where it plans to use the display but it says its is just a prototype.

Samsung also displayed other experimental technologies, aimed at making the VR experience better. One of these was the ‘Bio Blue’ technology, which helps in reducing the harmful blue light emitted from displays.

While, based on the fact the HTC Vive, Oculus Rift are getting mainstream and that virtual reality took center stage at MWC 2016; this could find a significant use case soon. We will obviously have to wait for Samsung to fully develop the screen, before it puts it out in the open.
