Google has acquired Cronologics, a wearable technology company, to bolster its Android Wear platform. The startup, Cronologics announced that its team has been acquired by the search giant.

Founded in 2014 by former Google employees, Cronologics had been developing its own smartwatch OS, alongside its own smartwatch called the CoWatch. The smartwatch was launched way back in September and it supported Amazon’s Alexa digital assistant. Just like Amazon Eco, the intelligent speaker, the CoWatch allowed users to book a cab or order pizza using voice commands.

Cronologics official statement reads,“We’re excited to announce the next phase of our journey — we are joining Google to help grow the portfolio of watches powered by Android Wear. We see strong alignment with Android Wear’s mission and look forward to working with our new colleagues at Google to continue pushing the frontier of wearable technology and smartwatches with Android Wear 2.0 and beyond,”

“We’ve loved working with you, and we look forward to new opportunities to serve you and partner with you in our new life at Google”, the team said.

The startup confirmed the acquisition on its site, but Google has not share details of the purchase. With this acquisition, Google might be looking the former Cronologics team to work on Android Wear 2.0.

The release of Android Wear 2.0 was originally planned for 2016 but has been pushed to next year. It’s being speculated that the acquisition would help Google to rework on its delayed Android Wear 2.0; and we could also see Google improving voice recognition capabilities on smartwatches.
