While Apple announced two new version of the iPhone 7, there were a couple of other important announcements at the keynote on September 7. The Apple Watch Series 2 was announced with a better, faster, processor and swim-proofing. The AirPod meanwhile became Apple’s first wireless device, ushering in a new era. Here is what we thought of the two new devices.

Apple Watch Series 2
The Apple Watch Series 2 is swim-proof and can resist water till depths of up to 50 metres. But how do you achieve something like this in a smartwatch with a bunch of entry points for the water to get it? Well, you cap most of the entry points and for the rest use the speaker to expel the water. Simple when you look at it, as speakers use air to create sound and the same air can be used to expel water from inside the device.

The Apple Watch Series 2 is also much faster than before and can do much more thanks to the dual core S2 processor. It also has a 1000 nits display, which makes it brighter than most, maybe all, smartphone screens out there. This means you will have no issues reading the screen in the bright Indian sun. There were not many announcements on whether this version will be able to save power more and we will need to wait for a full review to find that out.

For the more active among us the Nike + version seems apt. It will use Siri to start a run and give you just the data you need on the screen. It also looks a stunner. While the Series 2 has been priced at $369, the older version is now called Series 1 and has a $269 price tag. Interestingly, the Series 1 will now feature the dual core S2 processor. Also, with watchOS 3, the Apple Watch will now be much more feature rich than before, and bring in new elements like the wheelchair mode.

The Apple Watch Series 1 will be priced Rs 23,900 in India, while the Apple Watch Series 2 will be available for Rs 32,900. The new Ceramic version is a stunner, but has a really steep Rs 110,900 price tag. The Apple Watch Nike+ has a price of Rs 32,900.

Apple AirPods

Apple seems to be really proud of what it has been able to achieve with the AirPods, its first real wireless foray. The pods are really neat and come in really small charging cases that look like unbranded dental floss boxes. There is a resemblance to the Samsung Gear Icon X, but that seems like coincidence.

The pods are really intelligent, and work as a pair when you put them in your ears. They start pairing with all your devices through iCloud as soon as you take them out of the charging dock. Since they are paired to all connected devices, you can switch from the phone to the iPad or Watch seamlessly. Take one out and the music pauses on its own. But you just need one to use Siri, which has for the first time become really unfettered.

In fact, Siri can be summoned by just double tapping on one of the pods. Being wireless doesn’t mean the audio quality is held back in anyway, in fact it is as good assign the old wired pods. The pods have a stem that sticks down towards your mouth so as to catch your voice commands. This could be the start of something really big. The AirPods have to be bought separately at Rs 15,400 a pair.

I wasn’t able to test audio on the new lightning earphones.
