The new WhatsApp policy update has a section on intellectual property, copyrights and trademarks.
The next time you share a movie song or clip on WhatsApp you might want to think twice. The new WhatsApp policy update has a section on intellectual property, copyrights and trademarks that clearly says it is “committed to helping people and organizations protect their intellectual property rights”.
However, don’t expect WhatsApp to crackdown on all stuff that infringes copyright. That will happen only if someone reports the same and requests WhatsApp to remove any infringing content it is hosting — that would mean user profile pictures, profile names and status message.
The new policy says that while WhatsApp does not retain “users’ messages in the ordinary course of providing our Services”, they do host users’ account information, including profile pictures, profile names and status messages if included as part of account information.

However, WhatsApp suggests that before claim of copyright infringement is filed it might be better to “send a message to the relevant WhatsApp user you believe may be infringing your WhatsApp also ask for “information reasonably sufficient to permit” it to locate the material, which would mean the phone number of the individual who has submitted the infringing content. The July 7, 2012 legal policy of WhatsApp has no mention of intellectual property rights or copyright.
