Last week saw some crucial announcements in AI, with Elon Musk’s new large language generative AI model, Grok, being at the centre of the conversations. Now, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, whose company also held its first-ever developer conference this week, has taken a snipe at Musk’s new model.

In a tweet, Altman wrote, “GPTs can save a lot of effort”. He shared a screenshot of ChatGPT’s latest version that allows users to create customised versions of the chatbot known as GPTs. Adding fuel to the ongoing alleged rivalry between the two, Altman instructed the GPT Builder to “Be a chatbot that answers questions with cringey boomer humour in an awkward shock-to-get-laughs sort of way.”

In response to Altman’s query, GPT Builder responds by saying, “Great, the chatbot is set up! Its name is Grok. How do you like the name, or would you prefer something else?” Altman has not only downplayed Musk’s Grok model but also promoted the latest capabilities of ChatGPT. Musk is yet to respond to the tweet. So far, Altman’s tweet has garnered over 25K likes and thousands of comments.

On November 4, the Tesla boss announced the launch of Grok, which is intended to answer almost anything under the Sun. The model is expected to be incorporated into X (formerly known as Twitter). Grok will answer with a touch of humour. Interestingly, the company recommends users refrain from using it if they are uneasy with humour.

Grok has access to real-time knowledge of the world derived from the X platform. The model is four months old and is still in the beta phase, and its maker, xAI, says that they are working towards improving its efficiency in the coming days. According to the company, Grok has been developed to help humanity gain knowledge. The model is powered by Grok-1 LLM, and the prototype Grok-0 was trained on 33 billion parameters, which is believed to be as powerful as Meta’s LLaMA 2 with 70 billion parameters.

On the other hand, ChatGPT was introduced in November 2022 and went on to become one of the most sought-after consumer applications of our time. On November 6, OpenAI held its first-ever developer conference, where it allowed developers and creators to showcase the company’s technologies.

OpenAI’s DevDay 2023 introduced some groundbreaking AI advancements, including the Assistants API for building in-app AI agents and GPT-4 Turbo with a large token context window and image prompt capabilities. Another highlight was Custom GPTs, which can now be created with ease, even by non-coders. The conference also announced the GPT Store, a place that will enable creators to monetise their GPT applications.

Another feature which was announced, Copyright Shield, will protect enterprise users from copyright issues. On the surface, ChatGPT’s interface has been simplified, and its knowledge base has been updated to April 2023, with new functionalities like PDF search. A Startup Mentor program was also showcased, demonstrating the creation of specialised GPTs for specific advice.
