But in a recent post on X, the company announced that the ChatGPT app can is accessible to those on the free tier.
Similar to the web version of ChatGPT, the Windows app lets you ask anything questions, upload files, summarise text, access custom GPT and even generate images. The desktop version of ChatGPT even lets you access the Advanced Voice Mode, but it is limited to a few minutes per month for free users.
OpenAI also added a bunch of new keyboard shortcuts to ChatGPT on Windows that let you perform actions like opening a new chat, copying the last generated response, toggling the sidebar and deleting a conversation. You can also quickly access the ChatGPT app using the ‘Alt+Space’ key combination.

The ChatGPT Windows app also lets users take screenshots, which can then be shared with the AI chatbot. This is really helpful if you want to ask ChatGPT about something that is on your screen.
Available on Windows 10 and Windows 11, the ChatGPT app can either be downloaded from the Microsoft Store or by heading over to the OpenAI website, which will also redirect you to the store link.
OpenAI also updated the macOS version of the app with the ability to pair the AI chatbot with terminal or IDE (Integrated Development Environment). This enables users to ask ChatGPT to look at their code and help fix bugs.
