Adobe is exploring new ways for amateur musicians and podcasters to easily create customised music tracks. The software giant recently unveiled Project Music GenAI Control, a prototype tool that generates musical compositions using simple text prompts.

While AI-generated music is not new, Adobe’s offering aims to simplify the editing process so anyone can tweak the AI compositions to their liking. Users start by entering a text description like “intense hip-hop” or “upbeat jazz.” Project Music GenAI then churns out a musical track fitting that description. Just watch the tool in action in the video below.

The key difference from other AI music generators is Project Music GenAI’s built-in editing features. Without leaving the tool, users can adjust the tempo, melody patterns, intensity, and structure of the AI-generated tune. Sections can be remixed, and the length of an audio clip can be extended by looping it, crucial for podcast intros and outros.

Adobe says users can also refine the AI music by providing a reference melody. This allows a high degree of customisation without needing to manually edit audio waveforms in a digital audio workstation. To train its algorithms, Adobe fed Project Music GenAI exclusively public domain compositions.

Project Music GenAI Control is still in early development. Adobe has not revealed exactly how the editing features work or when the tool will launch. It is unclear if the music generator will be incorporated into Adobe’s existing creative apps like Audition and Premiere Pro.

For now, Project Music GenAI seems aimed at amateur creators and podcast producers who want quick, customised music without formal training. But it could eventually find use in professional workflows, providing sound designers and composers with AI-generated draft melodies to refine.
