Neeraj Chopra Final at Paris Olympics: Neeraj will aim to create history for India with his second successive gold medal on Thursday. (PTI)Neeraj Chopra Final at Paris Olympics: In what would be Team India’s last major hope for a gold medal, Neeraj Chopra will step out for the men’s javelin throw final at the iconic Stade de France on Thursday.
A gold medal finish will make Neeraj only the fifth man in Olympic history to defend the javelin title and the first Indian to win two gold medals in an individual event in the multi-sporting spectacle. Eric Lemming (Sweden; 1908 and 1912), Jonni Myyra (Finland; 1920 and 1924), Chopra’s idol Jan Zelezny (Czech Republic; 1992, 1996 and 2000) and Andreas Thorkildsen (Norway; 2004 and 2008) are the only ones to have defended their respective men’s javelin gold medals at the Games.
While he had only competed in three events this year, Neeraj entered the qualification round in Paris on Tuesday with customary nonchalance. Neeraj recorded a phenomenal 89.34m throw with his first and only attempt to automatically qualify for the final – his season-best and second-best throw of his overall career.
