This time though the British driver said that the Italian carmaker’s problems were set to extend to his next season with them, a statement that sent alarm bells ringing.
“It’s a terrible result. There is nothing positive to take from today,” Hamilton told BBC Radio 5 Live. “I’m eager for it to end, I’m looking forward to it ending. I’m not looking forward to the next one.”
When the BBC crew tried to clarify whether Hamilton meant the Qatar GP, which is next on the F1 calendar, he corrected them and said ‘Next season’.
Hamilton is currently sixth in the driver’s standings, and a good 74 points behind teammate Charles LeClerc. The Briton’s comments come at a time when F1 will see regulatory changes that will allow teams to make wholesale changes to cars and it seems like Ferrari might be behind teams like Mercedes that are set to take advantage of the new season next year.
“I can understand the reaction from Lewis just after the race, but we just have to calm down to discuss and to be focused on the next two [races], because the next two we will be back,” said Frederick Vasseur, Ferrari’s team principal.
He then added, “And keep in mind also that Lewis was there in FP1, in FP2 the pace was good, and it means that we have to build up the weekend like this and for sure to start from P20 is not the best way to have a good result.”
With two races in the season remaining, Hamilton could be in danger of not making the podium once all season, a record that would be unprecedented considering that the former World Champion has always found a way to be one of the top three drivers in a race atleast once every season since his arrival in Formula One.
