Once again in IPL 2024, MS Dhoni turned back the clock; a gentle reminder of his six-hitting nous in the death overs of an innings. But while his quickfire 37 against the Delhi Capitals in Vizag may not have turned the fate in his side's favor, Sunday was anything but. In the big ticket contest against fellow five-time IPL winners Mumbai Indians, for the Chennai Super Kings, came a hattrick of sixes in the final over that helped the defending champions breach the 200 run mark. Coming in to bat at six, Dhoni plundered three maximums off the four deliveries he faced - all off Mumbai Indians' skipper Hardik Pandya's bowling. In CSK's previous game - a home win against KKR - the former skipper had arrived to bat at five, raising speculations about a permanent promotion in the batting order. Having scored in access of 400 runs in the 2018 and 2019 season, Dhoni hasn’t been able to cross the 250 mark in any of the following seasons and has batted lower down the order. Earlier on Sunday, CSK were put in to bat by Mumbai Indians. Ruturaj Gaikwad (69 off 40) and Shivam Dube (66 off 38) mustered some much needed boundaries after the fall of the opening combination of Ajinkya Rahane and Rachin Ravindra. It was a second fifty for both Gaikwad and Dube in the ongoing season - the two being CSK's top run scorers in the ongoing season. For Mumbai Indians, who came into the game on the back of consecutive home wins, it was another poor outing with the ball this season. Jasprit Bumrah, who had snapped a 5-fer the other night against RCB, was unable to provide a breakthrough. Hardik Pandya snapped two wickets but was bashed for 43 runs from his three overs.
