Synopsis: Abhishek shows coach Lara why he should open, and Klassen’s fireworks help quell charge from Marsh and Salt

Abhishek the opener

Hyderabad’s Abhishek Sharma, who was their top run-getter last year, was dropped for two games after he was undone by a Trent Boult special in the first match and was then made a floater. On Saturday, he hit a whirlwind 36-ball 67, pulling, cutting, driving all around the park.

Abhishek lost his opening partner Mayank Agarwal, bounced out by Ishant Sharma on a Kotla wicket, and also saw Rahul Tripathi depart. But Abhishek counterattacked by smacking Ishant Sharma for 16 runs in an over, belting four boundaries. He hit nine fours in the Powerplay. He completed his fifty in 25 balls, hitting a massive six off Kuldeep Yadav.

Post the powerplay, Mitchell Marsh bowled a double-wicket maiden, taking out Aiden Markram (8), and Harry Brook for a duck. Courtesy Marsh’s brilliance, Sunrisers were reduced to 83 for 4 at the halfway stage but Abhishek again counterattacked, looting 24 runs off Mukesh Kumar in the eleventh over. Next over, Abhishek perished, trying to clear the long-on, but  Heinrich Klaasen (53 not out off 27b; 2×4, 4×6) carried on.

Abdul Samad put on a brisk 59-run stand with Klaasen in 33 balls. In the last five overs Sunrisers scored 62 runs with Akeal Hosein providing the final flourish as they reached 197 for 6.

Marsh and Salt power the chase

Chasing the massive total, Sunrisers had a perfect start with the ball with Bhuvneshwar Kumar cleaning up David Warner on the second ball. All-rounder Mitchell Marsh put up a grand show with the bat and till the time he was at the crease, Delhi were on course for a win. Marsh found a perfect ally in Phil Salt (59 off 35b; 9×4) and put on a 112-run stand in 66 balls.

Salt and Marsh walloped 22 runs from Umran Malik’s over and it proved to be the only one he bowled in the evening.

Leg-spinner Mayank Markande (2/20) took a sensational return catch, lunging low to his right, to terminate Salt’s knock. They lost the momentum post that dismissal to lose the game by nine runs. The hosts had totally lost the momentum in what seemed like a comfortable chase. Delhi Capitals lost the wickets of Salt, Manish Pandey and Mitchell Marsh inside two overs. The Indian batting unit of Delhi Capitals failed again. Manish Pandey (1 off 3b), Priyam Garg (12 off 9b; 1×4) and Sarfaraz Khan (9 off 10b; 1×4) were all out cheaply.

Axar Patel, Capitals’ best batsman after David Warner, walked out to bat at No 7 and by the time he came to bat, the match was out of their grasp. Axar remained unbeaten on 14-ball 29 as Sunrisers restricted Capitals to 188 for 6 to pull off a heist in Delhi.

At the end of it all, the captain Markram was a happy man. “I don’t mind getting things wrong if the approach is right. It helps to see such performances, the guys will see that results are there to be had. Credit to the way the team has responded. Klassy has been in great form, and Abhishek did the hard work early on.”
