Legendary Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar took a cheeky jibe on Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir after the duo shared pleasantries during the match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Kolkata Knight Riders at M Chinaswamy Stadium on Friday.
Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli shared a warm moment between them before the Royal Challengers Bengaluru vs Kolkata Knight Riders match as the Kolkata mentor hugged Kohli.
While doing commentary the former India coach Ravi Shastri said: “Maybe a fairplay award for that?”
Sunil Gavaskar immediately retorted: “Not just fairplay, maybe an Oscar award as well! This is not ending.”
Coming into the match, the overall narrative was the frosty relationship between the two players but the hug at least for the time being, put the animosity to bed. “Forget Fairplay these two should be given an Oscar award as well,” Sunil Gavaskar quipped on commentary.
Last season in the IPL, in a nailbiting finish in Bengaluru, Lucknow Super Giants pipped RCB by one wicket. Gambhir was there in the LSG dugout this team as the team mentor and the former India batter provoked the home crowd with a ‘finger on his lips’ response at them.

In the reverse fixture in Lucknow, Kohli returned the gesture to the Lucknow crowd after an 18-run win. An on-field tussle with LSG pacer Naveen-ul-Haq then carried on after the game. Kohli was then approached by LSG’s Kyle Mayers for a chat, when Gambhir intervened and pulled his player away from the RCB batter. Soon, the cameras caught Kohli and Gambhir in a heated exchange, prompting a host of players from both teams to hop in and control the situation.
The two were later seen in an embrace inside the dressing room.
In Friday’s match, Royal Challengers Bengaluru scored 182/6 against Kolkata Knight Riders in their Indian Premier League match on Friday.
Batting first, star batter Virat Kohli top-scored with an unbeaten 83 off 59 balls while Cameron Green (33 off 21 balls) and Glenn Maxwell (28 off 19 balls) made useful contributions, the latter while getting two reprieves.
Enjoying a good run of form, Kohli struck four fours and as many sixes during his fluent knock at the M Chinnaswami Stadium.
