Sachin Tendulkar. Virat Kohli. Wankhede Stadium. The trio have a history. Two proverbial passing of the torch moments in Indian cricket.

In 2011, as Tendulkar walked back to the pavilion after his dismissal at 31/2 in the World Cup final – in what would be his last World Cup – in came a 22-year-old Kohli, who stitched together a match winning 83-run stand with Gautam Gambhir to bring India back in the game. A short dialogue had taken place between the now top-two century scorers in international cricket, one that was recently revealed by the Tendulkar on Twitter.

“The ball is swinging even now,” the veteran would tell the youngster, who’d later win hearts by stating, “He (Tendulkar) has carried the burden of an entire nation on his shoulders. It’s time we carried him on our shoulders.”

In 2013, after Tendulkar walked back following a dismissal in his final innings for India, in came a 25-year-old Kohli, who struck a boundary off the very first delivery.

So, as the two met again on Monday at the same venue, all the memories would’ve flashed back. Not just for them, but for those who watched them catch up ahead of Mumbai Indians hosting Royal Challengers Bangalore on Tuesday.

The two teams had clashed to open their campaign in the 2023 Indian Premier League with RCB lending an eight-wicket thumping to the five-time champions at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore.

Since then, Bangalore have gone on to win just four of their next nine matches. Mumbai also have five wins off 10 games this season and lie sixth in the points table, owing to a weaker net run rate than RCB. At home, MI also have a 50 percent record with two wins and two defeats so far. Here are the details for the upcoming Mumbai Indians vs Royal Challengers Bangalore IPL 2023 game.
