India vs England, 2nd Test Day 4 Highlights: ENG 72/3 at Stumps vs IND, need 536 runs to win at Edgbaston

That's stumps. While there were questions if India declared at the right time, there is the answer. They have picked up three wickets in the 90-minute session they had, and they need another seven. The problem, though once the ball gets older, batting becomes easier and they have to wait till the second new ball; however, that is the passage when the likes of Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar needs to step. In addition to those two also it is a big day for Prasidh Krishna tomorrow. He has to keep it tight at least we will be back tomorrow folks do join us.

This is a superb spell from Akash Deep. Every time he has taken the ball, he has made things happen. The advantage for India is that the ball is still new, and tomorrow morning, there will be some more assistance, and Akash can bowl another length spell in the morning. We still have 10 minutes left today, so another three overs are a possibility It will be interesting to see if Gill would try and throw in an over of spin here. We have two right-handers in the middle in Ollie Pope and Harry Brook. He might not get a lot of help, but just to test the defences and concentration of batters.

That is a cracking ball from Akash Deep, the ball pitched and moved away to rattle the stumps of the Root. It was wide of the crease again as we mentioned, but it straightened this time, that is what did Root. The English batter is a special special player, and to get that wicket it was a special special delivery. Akash Deep is doing no harm to his chances going into the Lord's Test. There were questions when Bumrah was dropped but Akash boy o boy what a superb spell this is turning out to be. It does seem like just signs at least India has found their third seamer.

Akash is bowling well here. Especially the delivery he has gone wide of the crease is darting back in; however he would like to straighten it a bit. This has been a new ball wicket. India picked up three wickets in the first innings with the new ball and a couple early in the morning; however, post that the wicket went to sleep and today we are seeing a similar situation and India needs to create as many inroads as possible with the new ball. England on the other hand needs to make sure they try and get through this spell without not much harm done to themselves.

It might not be a bad ploy for Shubman Gill to bring in Prasidh early today. He did take a bit of time in the first innings to get him in. There is still time of about 40 minutes, which is around nine overs, if Prasidh can get a good five-over, burst that will be good. As per Siraj and Akash Deep they have been quite magnificent with their bowling so far it is hard to take the ball out of their hand but with the amount of runs in the bag it is worth a risk taking and bringing Prasidh into the attack and give him a spell here just to let him get some confidence in the game.

That was a beautiful delivery from Akash, the ball pitched and nipped back into Ben Duckett and the left-hander lost his off-stump. He is one of those batters who is a master and cutting the ball even the slightest bit of length is short however, Akash has got it perfect in the first innings he did it again today. Joe Root has walked into the middle this is increasingly looking harder and harder for England not that they have had any substantial chance before. Mohammed Siraj too from the other end has been quite magnificent India will be looking to push for Root's wicket today evening.

These two have been the best bowlers in the first innings. They have picked up all 10 wickets, and they have started magnificently again here. One thing about England's top order is that while both Pope and Crawley are match winners, they do fail quite often. It is Duckett who is more or less the consistent one. With someone like Root in the middle and Brook's, consistency can take care of itself but facing the new ball regularly is not ideal for Root; hence it becomes imperative they have some amount of consistency at the top. Pope especially if he can stitch a decent partnership with Duckett and take the shine off the ball, will help Root.

Well, there is the first wicket. Mohammed Siraj pitched one up and Zack Crawley tried to drive it through the off-side and the ball went straight to the point fielder. That is a lovely catch from the fielder over there, and this is the worst possible start England could have wanted. Crawley is is going through one of the very poorest patches in his career. And that is another failure it is a flat wicket and runs are there to be had however, he just seems to be too hasty to play too many shots too early. Ollie Pope has come into the middle with lot of work to do. 

India has been able to extract more than England could in the first innings. We might see a bit more today because of the overcast conditions and the pitch doing a tad bit more. It is going to be one of the toughest opening phases both Zack Crawley and Ben Duckett would have faced.

We have Akash Deep padded up, so even for a while India will be looking to bat. The lead has gone past 607, which should be enough. However, as we update, India has decided to declare here. We have 75-80 minutes left in today's play, which is quite a bit of time to pick 2-3 wickets. England's mind will be rattled. If they decide to go for these runs, they have to go about it quite strategically and also swiftly and if they are deciding to go for a draw that too should come strategically, as this team is not used to drawing games are their defences suited for it we will find out when they come back.

Shubman Gill has fallen here. he tried to keep up the ante and got caught by Bashir. That is one of those Test matches Gill, at the end of his career, look back at one of his finest as batter and the one that has shown his potential. As per the declaration, we still see no signs. New batter has walked into the middle and seems like India will continue. While this side will not play for a draw but the Indian think tank is getting themselves into a situation where England wants to play for a draw, they have the possibility of doing it. As we update Nitish Reddy has fallen here.

It does seem like India has enough and they are just hurting England here. With the amount of runs on the board, they can declare, but both Gill and Jadeja, the way they are batting, seem like they want to go on for another 50 minutes. India needs to have enough spell time for both Siraj and Akash Deep to create that breakthroughs with the new ball and also they want the ball to be new and fresh for tomorrow morning to exploit if there is any moisture. There has been no rain today but it has been cloudy and it is important that India also consider that the forecast part.

Ravindra Jadeja is closing in on a half-century here. It has been an odd innings from him under the circumstances, when considered overall it has been a good innings. he took his time initially, picked his bowlers and now is looking to accelerate; however, he might have started to go after the bowling a quicker which he did not. Nevertheless, after 89 in the first innings, another good contribution here. As we update, Jadeja gets to his 50 and does his trademark celebration. He did his job with the bat is done now it is with the ball. he needs to contribute on the rough.

We have had a glimpse at the dressing room, the balls have been checked, at we might see India declaring soon. As of now, they lead by 521 runs, which has never been chased before as per history, but given how England approach their batting innings in the final innings and the flatness of the wicket, India might want to be a tad bit careful. However, India might extract more out of this wicket than English seamers did in the first innings We have seen Indians bowling hard lengths and getting more out of it, and English seamers bowled fuller ones too often and got driven.

Bashir tossed one up, Ravindra Jadeja went down the ground to slap it for a six. The intent that was asked for seems to be coming now. Shubman Gill too has gone to a different level playing in complete T20 mode, dancing down the track and giving himself room. This is going to be a nightmarish evening session for England, the ball does not have any shine on it the pitch is doing nothing, and the worst of it all, they have to come to bat under this cloudy sky later with a mammoth total in front of them. India is looking very good to square the series here.

We are back, it is the crucial final session for England more than India. They have to limit the damage in this game because India will come all guns blazing and will look to declare somewhere around one hour to go.

That is Tea here in Edgbaston, and Shubman Gill with a quick single has reached his 100 in the middle. As per the game situation, India is in an excellent position. The only thing baffling about that session was Jadeja's innings and his pacing We have to see how he goes in the evening session. As per England, they did not have much to do. The wicket is not helping much, and the bowlers are too tired. Next session has to be the final time India will be batting in this Test, many how long we will know. Shubman Gill is on 98 at the moment. It has been quite a lovely innings from him again. He has been a lot more fluent. In his marathon 269 run innings he did start a bit slowly but today right from the word go the driving has been sublime and shot making too has been perfect. He would love to complete his century before Tea here. Post that we might see some real fire works from his bat at least. What Jadeja will do is something to be seen. India are at the moment 481 runs ahead if they give a good hard push in the final session they might go past 600 lead.

India still has quite a bit of batting left, and it might be time to have a go at the bowling. While Jadeja can make up for the lost time because of his hitting abilities but the move on has to come. The fields are coming close, and also his not rotating the strike will affect the rhythm of Gill's innings, who is playing like a dream. When Pant was batting in the middle, Gill was batting quite fluently, although he is still doing now not taking singles is just asking for more pressure. Stokes has placed a couple of fielders close in for Jadeja already.

Ben Stokes is operating at the moment with Shoaib Bashir. The bowlers have put on quite a bit of workload in this Test match for England it will be interesting to see what bowlers they select for the next game. If Archer is first to go, that should be a call of no-brainer as per others who he replaces Tongue should be the obvious one because of his performance however, both Woakes and Carse have put on quite a bit of overs under their belt. Chris Woakes especially is quite a crucial player for England coming into bat at eight and he is quite useful in these conditions.

Ravindra Jadeja's innings is a bit puzzling at the moment. Looks like he is in a bit of no man's land with his innings. He is blocking a few and and trying to rotate strike it is kind of sucking the momentum out of what Pant has done. To play devil's advocate, it might be a plan for the Indian team to stop the rot. Usually India in recent times from situations such as these have collapsed quite quickly. Maybe that is what is playing on Jadeja and the Indian team's mind; however, the runs are way too many to worry about that, maybe its just about putting England out in the field.

Shubman Gill has now become the player to score the most runs in a Test match for India, going past Sunil Gavaskar. The 100 at Leeds was a good start, but this definitely is the one that will silence the doubters. A 269 in the first innings now looking on course to score a ton and three more games left in the series it can be one of those series for Gill where after his retirement can be looked back on like the Virat Kohli has had in 2014 but to be fair this so far has gone even better for Gill thus far.

We have reached the afternoon water break here, and India has gone at a steady pace. Since Pant's dismissal, the scoring rate might have come down a bit, but we might see a change now. Shubman Gill will be eying a 100 here. It is there for the taking. Jadeja, on the other hand, needs to get a move on. As per England it is important that they start and look at least for a while at the leakage of runs as it is running away quickly. While this is still a massive score to chase, but not the record chase yet, that is still quite a bit of way. As per India they would want to touch 550.

Ravindra Jadeja's innings will be quite crucial here. While he can afford to take a few balls to get in, he might have to pull in the plug with the strike rate sooner. With six wickets in hand, India should be looking to get as many runs as possible as quickly. As of now, he is just leaving the ball and getting adjusted to the pace of the wicket which is fine but post drinks break which we are approaching things have to change. Shubman Gill too need to keep taking his chance from time to time it is India's time to stamp their authority not just in the Test match but also in the series.

Rishabh Pant has fallen here in the most Pant fashion. He charged down the track to Bashir, tried to strike down the ground and lost his handle, and the long-off fielder galloped the catch. Ravindra Jadeja has been promoted up the order, we might see a bit more or a bit less of the same from him. Once again, England have tried to bowl line and length instead of using some T20 variations here in the middle. The way India are going here there might not be too much emphasis on survival on batting long in shorter terms it might be Ben Stokes looking to set fields against his own approach.

It will be interesting to see when India wants to declare in this game. The lead is over 400 if the bat at the tempo they are batting, they will get closer to 550. Will that be something the team is comfortable with will be interesting to see. If India needs to bowl out England they need two new balls which means they need to declare at a stage where India has atleat 100 overs to bowl will they be looking at 600 or 500 and how will be England looking to go about their business in the final innings will be quite an interesting battle tomorrow. Also, the longer England is out in today, the more tired they will be.

This is good for India, they are into business right away. Problems for Stokes here, the leading is already inching 400, 20 minutes into the session. Bashir and Tongue are in operation so far in this session. What will be very interesting to see is how Ben Stokes will approach from here. He is a very clever captain, but situation such as this is quite tricky for any skipper. Shubman Gill has reached his half-century here on the back of 269. His dream run continues. What a series he is having as a skipper in the middle, he has a 100 for the taking too.

10 minutes into the session, we are already seeing the T20 approach here. England, like India for some strange reason, has decided to deploy the short ball theory here, and Gill, understanding the plan, is moving all over to punish the ball on the leg-side. This might be a mistake from Ben Stokes, one shot Gill is good at is pulling the ball, and if Stokes wants to use the short ball tactic, it has to be quite accurate and pacy. If not Gill will hurt them for breakfast lunch and dinner. It might also not be a bad ploy for England given the situation to use some T20 tactics.

We resume folks! India leads by 357 runs in this session, both Gill and Pant will be looking to accelerate the scoring at a brisk pace and take the lead closer to 500. So far things have gone to a pretty good plan for India and in all possibility there are only two results which can be gained from here.

Relishing the opportunity to lead the Indian bowling attack in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj described his six-wicket haul as ‘sensational’.

Speaking after the day’s play, Siraj told broadcasters JioHostar: “This feeling is unbelievable. I’d been waiting for a moment like this for over a year. I always bowled well but wickets didn’t come. Today, the morning session felt good but still no breakthrough — so these six wickets are really special. The pitch was slow, but I knew I had a responsibility.”

That's the morning session done. It would have been a shared session, however, because of where India is in this game, it belongs to them. There were moments in that session where England did have had the upper hand however, once Pant came in, his game rattled them clearly. The lead is quite heavy already. England might sound brave in the press conference if they still want to win this contest, they will need to score at a brisk pace and keep wickets in hand. If there is an anti-bazball approach or blueprint, India is showing it here at least as far as batting goes. We will be right back, do stay with us for the noon session.

Whatever India posts here, England will look to chase; hence India might be looking to get into a position at least historically get past that score which has been never chased down before with a number of overs left where England are made to score at fives that will be the dangling of the carrot moment from Gill if it plays out that way.

Well, Pant tried to hit one through the mid-wicket and the bat slipped out of his hand and flew to square-leg and fell. Everyone is amused at the ground, that is what one gets at Pant, he is all over the place. The following ball presented an opportunity for Chris Woakes tough one though, which he spilt. The England players are looking a bit rattled here since Pant has come in. It is a dangerous place to be in a Test match, way behind in the game and someone as unpredictable as Pant is out in the middle trying to do unorthodox stuff. This is quite an exciting period of Test match here.

Pant has been dropped by Crawley here. Pant charged down the ground to whack a ball over the top, however, did not get the middle, and Crawley at mid-off spilt a simple chance. Nothing has gone well for Crawley in this series, and that catch shows where he is and his career is at this point in time. It is a very tricky period in this game. Pant is quite an x-factor player he gave his chance, and it has been spilt. he is not looking to settle down here. The game situation demands the knock he is playing right now, and if he plays for a while, England will be out of this game.

That was a cracking delivery from Josh Tongue to Rishabh Pant. The ball was fuller, and after going back in, it moved away slightly to take the off-stump and middle stump of Rahul. Superb work by Tongue, while if he can produce deliveries like those, going for a few might be acceptable from England's perspective. Rishabh Pant has walked in, and he has already started to do Pant things. A 60-70 from him here will take the game away from England, with the ball moving a bit, we have seen him struggle with the delivery, which is around fourth stump channel and moves away slightly. 

India's lead has gone past 300 here; from here on, things will get concerning for England. Also, both the new ball bowlers who have been exceptional in the morning are done with the opening bursts, and Stokes and Tongue will be brought into the attack this w,here Stokes might be missing a bit of trick here. He needs to bring in Bashir early in this game just to see what is on offer. In this session with cloud cover on and possible moisture, he might get a bit of turn. If this partnership goes on or India's lead extends too long, it will get quite tricky for the spinner to pick wickets or contain runs.

It has been a passage that both teams have shared. While Indian batters, both Rahul and Nair, have played some sumptuous shots,, there have also been a lot of plays and misses when England players hit the hard-length areas and the ball was nibbling around. However, the good thing for England is these have been the best conditions to bowl they have got in this entire Test match, and India is not a lot ahead in this game. It is important they make the most of these conditions and pick few more wickets. For India, for now, it is about survival and playing each ball on its merit; aggression can come later in the day.

A ball from Carse has kept low here from the same end where it has taken off at times in the first innings. The ball has been doing a bit more in this session compared to what we have seen in the last three days, however, with cloud cover on, will it deteriorates enough is something to be seen by tomorrow. Also, it might be time Stokes considers bringing in Bashir for a spell here while Gill is still new at the crease. We have seen oddball turning yesterday, and we might see a bit more today. Having said all that, this Test match looks like it might end up in a draw. The surface for the fourth day pitch has not got as bad as it should to get a result.

Carse has bowled quite well today morning. He has mixed it up nicely and, most importantly, he has used the angle pretty well at the crease, going wide or going close to the stumps. The important thing is how long will Stokes use him he has bowled a lot in the first innings and cannot keep Carse on forever who alse was struggling with a niggle in the first innings. Josh Tongue, who is the backup bowler in this game, needs to deliver a good performance today. He has had an ordinary game so far, and if England need to make something out of this game, Tongue needs to deliver.

There is the wicket it was a fuller one, and Nair, who was quite cautious with his driving, eventually did drive one, and the ball took the edge to Jamie Smith, who took a lovely catch. It is hard to decide what to make out of Nair's tenure so far. He has had four opportunities, and he looked good and elegant, but did not get runs. There are a few players of that ilk who look million dollars with their game but end up not making many runs. The team management might have to think about his place after two failures, and also he is in his mid-30s they do have Sai Sudharsan in the squad who is young and can be developed.

There is a bit of cloud cover in the air, the ball is nibbling a bit for the last couple of overs, it is that phase where the lacquer comes off, and the ball tends to move more and we are seeing a bt of that and England's Woakes and Carse both are hitting that hard-lenghts and the ball around fourth stump is nibbling a bit Karun Nair is finding things a bit challenging here this just might be a blessing in disguise for England to have that cloud cover on and lights in place and the ball just in shape to swing and seam a bit. Interesting passage of play here.

The dilemma here for England is how much they want to attack and defend. While given the nature of pitch, another record chase is possible in the final innings, but for that, they have to pick the Indian side for a low score, and the flatness of the pitch means they have to over-attack, which can cut both ways, and in no time, India can run away with the game. That is the balance Stokes needs to strike here. Also, whatever he wants to do it has to be done before the ball loses its shine because once that happens, taking wickets is pretty tricky business on this one.

The crucial part for England in the first hour will be the lengths they bowl. The ball is still only 14 overs old,, and pitching the ball full will let the batters drive easily and it is something which has not worked in the first innings. It is hard length pitching the ball to hit the top of the off-stump, which has worked. Also, Woakes has been one bowler who has looked threatening for England, and once his spell is done, it has been quite easy for the Indian batters to score runs, and India would want to be a tad bit cautious against Woakes and feast on the remainder of the bowlers.

Look's another beautiful day for cricket. The ball is in India's court; they have a lead of nine wickets and a chance to dictate the tempo of this game. How they will go about things today will tell a lot about the culture and philosophy of the new leadership group going forward. It is going to be a cracking day of cricket, do stay with us.

“I still think we can win this Test match, to be honest. I believe if we take a couple of early wickets tomorrow and put them under pressure and hopefully they can crumble up there and everybody knows in the world that we are going to try and chase whatever they set us, so we’ll see how they play,” said Brook to BBC after his marathon 303-run partnership with wicketkeeper batter Jamie Smith.

England’s wicket-keeper Jamie Smith came into bat in the day’s second over with the immediate task of denying Mohammed Siraj a dream hat-trick. W, W, W didn’t happen, it would be W, W, 4. The fall of Joe Root and Ben Stokes didn’t deter Smith from playing an audacious straight drive on Siraj’s pitched-up, challenging hat-trick ball.

This is how Smith, his partner Harry Brook, and England in general, play. When cornered they hit themselves out of trouble and keep hitting. In a matter of 25 overs, after India had reduced England to 84/5, Smith reached his 100 in 80 balls in the last over of the session.

Shubman Gill put on a show on Day 2 of the second Test between India and England and Vaibhav Suryavanshi was among the under-19 stars who were there at Edgbaston to witness it. Gill scored 269 in 387 balls which helped India put up a mammoth total 587. India then went on to take three wickets to finish the second day firmly on top.

The India U19 team is also in England, touring the nation for five Youth ODIs and two Youtn tests. Their coach Hrishikesh Kanitkar said in a video posted on the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) website that National Cricket Academy (NCA) head and batting great VVS Laxman was instrumental in making sure that the colts were at Edgbaston on the day.

Since Virat Kohli no longer plays Tests, Mohammed Siraj is easily the most expressive Indian cricketer. A montage of his face at different phases of this topsy-turvy day captured the varied emotions that the Indian team went through at Edgbaston. At the start of the day Siraj took two big wickets off successive balls and towards the end he dismissed three tailenders in five balls. But there was a long period of frustration in between.

During his joyous wicket-taking spree, Siraj was running on the central square – doing a Ronaldo one minute, raising both his hands and blowing kisses the next. And during that wicket-less period when Harry Brook (158) and Jamie Smith (184 not out) put up a 303-run stand; he was all grimaces, cursing luck and holding his head with both hands.
