IND vs ENG 2nd Test Day 5 Highlights: Akash Deep’s 10-wicket haul helps India beat England by 336 runs at Edgbaston to level series 1-1

Tough one. Two moments. Having them at 200/5 and not being able to burst them open. And then being 80/5. Was going to be tough to scrape it back from there. As I just said, having a team 200/5, you're in a commanding position. But as it got deeper and deeper, the wicket didn't expect the way we played. It probably suited India more. We tried everything, changed plans, but when a team is on top of you, hard to wrestle it back. Shubman had an unbelievable game with the bat. Always a difficult position to find yourselves batting at the end of the day. Jamie has been incredible since he's came into the team. Goes massively under the radar with his keeping which is what you want from a keeper.

Akash Deep picks up the final wicket of Brydon Carse, which is a 10-wicket haul for the pacer. What a game he has had here. India has levelled the series amidst all the questions on selection calls. Apart from Nitish Kumar Reddy and Karun Nair three all the changes have worked out. A special mention for captain Shubman Gill, who has led the team from the front with the bat. Mohammed Siraj too in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, played the role of leader of the attack perfectly. As per England their bowling has looked way out of shape for wickets like this. Akash Deep, a cricketer from a small Indian village, is known for his honest and rustic charm. He doesn't shy away from expressing himself, even using traditional Hindi words like "anushaasan" for discipline. Ravindra changed the angle and came around the wicket and tossed one up. Tongue trying to flick one through the leg-side had too much bottom hand in his shot and ended up giving up a catch to Ravindra Jadeja, who took a lovely catch. That is nine down now. India can see it they are one win away from a famous win away from him and it marks the beginning of new era. There were questionable calls taken but what do we know sitting on the outside in the end what matters is the win and with questionable calls from outsiders young Gill's India are almost there.

While it will be Bumrah who will be coming back for India for England, it will be Jofra Archer, however, in place of whom is something to be seen. Given how the two games have gone it has to be Josh Tongue. He is the one bowler who struggled with rhythm and failed to put up with the pressure coming after Carse and Woakes. On the other hand, if they want to prepare wickets like this, then Woakes almost gets neutrazlied with his bowling as he does not get much swing and seam moment;, it is almost like playing in overseas conditions. It is an interesting selection dilemma for England.

India has never won at this venue, and they are on the verge of winning one here under Shubman Gill. All in all, it has been a superb performance with some flaws in the middle. Gill looks back at his captaincy in the first innings and when he let away Jamie Smith and Harry Brook off the hook, but in this innings he has been superb. However, one thing Gill can improve upon is usage of spinners he tends use them in smaller spells than what spinners like. That might come once he captains back home in India good wickets here demand longer spell from spinners.

Akash Deep bowled a slower bumper, which Jamie Smith pulled; however, he was beaten off the pace, and the ball went straight to the square-leg fielder. While the variation is appreciated but the shot selection from Smith is questionable, especially when his side is looking for a draw. As per Akash Deep, he got four in the first innings and five now. A lot of questions were raised when he came into the side in place of Bumrah, but he has proved his worth and made a strong case for the next game in London starting on Thursday. India can sense it they are almost there; they can win this contest.

There were plenty of questions on this side on Day 1 of the selection; however, here we are on Day 5, where India are on the verge of levelling the series. It has not been dramatic, but they have gone about their business quite professionally. They haven't run after wickets, they kept bowling their plans, and wickets kept falling as the game went on. Shubman Gill, although he has made a few mistakes his batting was so sublime that India are way ahead in this game. As per England there has been plenty of talk about chasing anything but today they had only one option left and clearly this is a side which is not ready for it.

Prasidh Krishna has picked his first wicket of the Test match, and it is Chris Woakes. It was a good length delivery which the batter tried to play through mid-wicket and got the top edge The ball went high in the air and Siraj at mid-wicket took a simple catch. India are chipping away at England here. They need three more wickets to win this game. While both seamers are bowling well, just to test the defenses of these players, it might not be a bad ploy for Gill to bring in Ravindra Jadeja for a spell to see if he can get through the defences of the English tail.

It has gone quite dark here quite quickly and the lights have come on which is not a very pleasant sign for both the teams because from Indian perspective there will be some moment but also it is a sign there is rain around the corner and from the England perspective the positive part is there is rain around the corner which can help them save this Test match but also conditions are overcast and the bowlers can pick a few wickets. From just game perspective, we hope there is no rain interruption that decides the outcome from this game if England draws it playing out overs, kudos likewise, if India bundles out, congrats but if it is a draw because of rain does leave a bitter taste in the mouth.

Jamie Smith has got to his half-century here. After 150 in the first innings, this is another magnificent innings from the English keeper here. In addition to going to 50, he is also looking to attack Sundar, the off-spinner here and put him out of the attack that is one way of survival. Also Ravindra Jadeja has been taken out of the attack and Akash Deep has been brought into the attack which should have been done at the start of the session not a long spell but 4-5 overs burst here might pick up a wicket. Also this is a challenge for Gill the skipper if he wants to keep a pacer spinner combination or spinner spinner or Pacer pacer. 

Since Bazball has started, various teams have tried various countereffective measures; the most efficient has been ,that Rohit Sharma with his calmness, used in the 2024 series and Pakistan last year deployed turners. However, what India has shown in this Test match the way to counter this side is simple: go back to basics and make the most of the batting conditions. If you are coming to England going forward have a batting unit which is equipped with batters who can score 600 runs which does put immense pressure on them and also makes them reassess the kind of pitches they have to use.

Shubman Gill here has decided to start with the finger spinners, and why not? There is some grip for both of them, and both of these batters are not quite accustomed to playing this quality of spin yet in their careers. However, Chris Woakes is a capable batter, and his role in this partnership would have been defined by Bazz and Stokes. He will look to bat survive and just take the time out of this game. In India, it is the game of patience. There are not a lot of modern batters who are equipped with their techniques to play for a draw, and it this applies more so for the lower order batters of England.

The England batters are in the middle and there is a spring in the step of the Indian fielders why not? They are on the verge of a famous win here. They have ticked all the boxes in this game all they want is now the spinners run through the English lower order. Although fancy a burst from Akash Deep here.

He also set a new Indian record for most runs in a single Test, accumulating over 430 runs and eclipsing Sunil Gavaskar's 344 runs from 1971. Well, well, Jadeja bowled an over within a couple of minutes, which allowed India to get in another over of Washington Sundar. The off-spinner managed to get rid of England skipper Ben Stokes It was nicely tossed up by Sundar, and Stokes, because of his tendency to read the ball of length, was a tad bit late onto the ball with the bat and had his pad in front of it. Although it was plumb, Stokes sent it upstairs only to see three reds on Hawk-Eye. It is getting quite difficult for England, it does seem like Shubman Gill is going to get his first win as captain. Five minutes away from lunch here, and India has turned to Washington Sundar. This is a wicket he will extract a lot of bounce; however, he might not get the same amount of turn Jadeja is being to extract but there is still enough for him to exploit the conditions.

Mohammed Siraj has looked a bit off colour today. He has started the spell well, but as it progressed,, he is looking a tad bit lacklustre. The wicket does not have a lot at the moment for him. It is the job of spinners and Nitish Kumar Reddy to try and create something in this phase. While there is not much to play with the end Gill wants to use with regards to Jadeja and Sundar it is the pacers from the other end who need to find something to create breakthroughs. Nitish, on the other hand, who bowls military medium, has had a quiet game to justify his selection. Chipping in with a couple of wickets will do him a world of good.

Well, the end from Jadeja is operating there is a rough outside it, and the ball is turning sharply from that region. Ben Stokes, even when he has travelled to India he has the tendency of playing a spinner based on length rather than picking from his hand, which has been partly reason for his downfall in the subcontinent conditions with Jadeja having some help and conditions resembling India, this is a great Test for Stokes. It might be too early to say, but the amount this pitch has is hard to see how England will get away from this it will require not just temperament but skill with luck if they have to get a draw out of it Those footholes and second new ball is too much ammunition for India.

This is an important passage of play for the Indians. In the first innings, both Jamie Smith and Harry Brook were too attacking and took the game away from the Indians for a bit after India picked up five early wickets. Today again, the ball for Siraj has stopped moving much, but Jadeja is getting help as he is pitching the ball into the footmark. While India is in control of the field sets from Gill has been a tad bit defensive at this point in time against Jamie Smith. He can have a lot more fielders close in to push for that wicket. Regardless of the result of this game, it is a huge learning curve for Shubman Gill here.

We have a double change here, both Siraj and Jadeja are brought into the attack. It will be interesting spell from Jadeja at Leeds, he did get sharp criticism for the lines and lengths he bowled despite the rough and today he has help again today but he has to bowl well. He has the tendency to bowl quicker through the air irrespective of the conditions he did the same mistake in the first innings however, the thing with Jadeja is usually it takes him 10-12 overs to get into some sort of rhtyhm and given the game situation Gill can afford to give Jadeja long spell here and let seamers operate from the other end.

This has been the session of Akash Deep. With all the rain around, obviously there would have been some help, but Akash Deep's bowling has been quite accurate, and the adjustment he made to target the stumps more has worked. As per England, they are in all sorts of trouble while the draw is not Bazball style, but he needs to go for it. There is no way they will be winning this game. This is a new ball wicket; however, the rain has left some moisture in the pitch, which has played into the hands of the Indian players. We might see the introduction of Siraj after the break here.

There are cracks on the wicket that are playing their part as of now. The ball in addition to seaming around is also keeping low and bouncing up. This was always going to happen from the end Akash is bowling, which once again questions Stokes' decision to bowl first. While that is the way England plays their cricket but this was a bat-first wicket. Even if there was not much rain, if sun had baked the surface for five days, it would have assisted some turn. Akash, because of his natural length and accuracy, is making the most of this wicket, which is the advantage he gained by playing domestic cricket and bowling plenty of overs on flat wickets.

Akash Deep, although he did bowl well in Australia earlier in the year, could not pick up many wickets, but here in this Test match, he has been magnificent. He can hit hard lengths and subtle moments at the crease, going wide when needed and coming closer to the stumps to bring in more variation. Also, the pitch has been quite conducive to his kind of bowling. The ball, when pitched on hard length, especially the new one, did quite a bit now, and today morning he continued from where he left off with a slight adjustment of getting closer into the stumps, that is a superb adjustment he made today.

Another wicket has fallen here, and it is Akash Deep yet again. The ball kept low, and Harry Brook was surprised by how low it stayed. This is exceptional bowling from Akash. He is targeting the stumps and the ball is doing everything. There is quite a bit of seam moment on offer for the bowlers. It might not be a bad ploy for India to bring in Mohammed Siraj from the other end here just to close this game out while they can. Prasidh is bowling well but he is spraying a few poor deliveries as well along the way which can be cut if Siraj comes into attack for a spell.

Well, Akash Deep starts the day with a wicket and it is Ollie Pope. That was on the stumps, and Pope does have a tendency to chop on the ball onto stumps, trying to defend the ball because of the gap he leaves between his pad and bat. That is what happened there. Very good from Akash Deep, we have seen him nibbling around the fourth stump channel from hard lengths yesterday, today he is targeting the stumps and Pope, who is frantic in nature, is prone to have some defensive flaws early in his innings. Ben Stokes has walked into the middle for England, an important innings from the English skipper.

Akash Deep and Prasidh have started the session today, which is a bit strange. Siraj has bowled quite magnificently yesterday, but Gill and co. decided to go with Prasidh. There is nothing wrong with it, but India today is pushing for wickets, and they have to be cut-throat with wicket-tacking. The confidence to youngsters can be given another time, but this is a bit baffling. Whatever the case Krishna needs to strike here. There will be some moisture in the wicket, which will assist him if he looks to seam the ball around It is an opportunity for him to prove his worth in the side.

The duality of England, not long ago we did not expect a start there is bright sunshine right now. Harry Brook and Ollie Pope are walking in. Indian seamers their job is cut out. The task of the Indian bowlers is cut out. With all the rain in there will be some moisture in the wicket and they will be looking to make the most of it.

It’s going to be about asking questions on a good length because as the ball gets a little softer, it is harder to strike. But, I’m just happy with the three [wickets so far],”

India is dominating the second Test against England at Edgbaston, having made a strong comeback after losing the first match. England's decision to bowl first on a flat pitch backfired, allowing India, led by captain Shubman Gill's record-breaking batting (including a double century and a century in the same match), to set a formidable target of 608 runs. England are currently 72/3 at stumps on Day 4, needing 536 more runs with 7 wickets in hand, making an Indian victory highly likely. The final day has been delayed by rain, but the forecast suggests clearer weather after lunch, which will also favor India's pacers.

“I still think we can win this Test match, to be honest. I believe if we take a couple of early wickets tomorrow and put them under pressure and hopefully they can crumble up there and everybody knows in the world that we are going to try and chase whatever they set us, so we’ll see how they play,” said Brook to the BBC.

“Harry Brook said yesterday that they would go for the chase — we are in for an exciting day of cricket. England have got success playing that style of cricket. If they are happy to take it on (so be it),” Morkel said after Stumps on Day 4.

“The volume of runs, not many people have done that, so you’ve got to admire his dedication, his concentration, his fitness and his skill level to come out and do it. So, it’s got to be well played,” said the former English cricketer.

“Well, I’m fed up of watching him (Shubman Gill) bat, really,” said with a laugh to the BBC. “As much as I like watching batters get runs. He has played brillaintly well, superbly well in both games, but in particular in this game here. Getting sort of 250 and then another 150, now that’s pretty special.”

India has put England in a philosophical dilemma. From their captain, coaches, experts and fans, they all vouch that this team doesn’t do draws. England either win or they go down fighting. On the final day, the home team needed to score 536 runs and have 7 wickets in hand. After the play, England assistant coach Marcus Trescothick conceded that they “they needed to score hell of a lot runs” but they will “remain positive”, before finally conceding that they might have to think about the third result of draw.
