Brydon Carse in the attack now and a tired ball to start as Gill slices at it, gets athe toe end of the bat and that's gone to the vacant third man boundary for a four!! Takes a couple next as he retains strike. And it gets worse with a no ball!! Tiredness has set in for England. And Pant comes down the ground for another 4!!! This has been an expensive over!! 

IND 350/3 after 82 overs

England have taken the new ball now. Can that make a difference? The responsibility falls on Woakes. Pant to face. A dot to start and Pant tries to run but is sent back by Gill. Tries a slog sweep, gets the toe end and no one knew where the ball went but it somehow makes its way to the boundary to bring up Pant's 50. 3000 Test runs for Pant.

On to the 80th over and Gill and Pant are  steadily building towards a huge total as the England bowlers look hapless. Bashir in to deliver and 1 run from the first 3 deliveries. Good over. Just the single from it.

Lalith Kalidas points out that Gill is now only the fifth Indian to have scored a century in his debut Test as captain. Meanwhile, his partnership with Pant has crossed 100, making this the second 100-plus partnership for India today. Gill has been involved in both.

Shubman Gill becomes the 33rd man to score a hundred on Test captaincy debut. Only the 5th Indian to achieve the feat after Vijay Hazare (164* v ENG, 1951), Sunil Gavaskar (116 v NZ, '76), Dilip Vengsarkar (102 v WI, '87) and Virat Kohli (115 & 141 v AUS, 2015). #INDvsENG

He brings it up in style. A wonderful cover drive off Tongue's second ball in the 75th over, it goes careening to the boundary and Gill stands and watches it as it does so. Then he takes off his helmet, no big celebrations, hardly a smile even. A captain's knock if there ever was one really. He has brought that century up in 140 balls. 

There is the Rishabh Pant we all know and those two shots take India to 300! Bashir's third ball of the 74th over is paddled through fine leg for four. Then Pant skips down the track and smashes the fourth ball soaring back over the bowler's head, all the way into the stands behind the sightscreen. Pant is on 41 off 71 at the end of that over, Gill on 98 off 138. 

Tongue continues for the 73rd over, his second ball is wide and lands on a full length. Gill smashes it away through deep third for a four. He then goes for a single next ball but Pant sends him back! Gill scrambles and dives, if it was a direct hit, he was gone. 

And what a century it will be if he does get there. There is a bowling change coming though, Bashir seems set to continue from one end and at the other, Tongue has taken the ball from Woakes for the 71st over. 

Pant on 24 off 56, Gill on 91 off 129.

And well, some unbelievable luck for Pant there which is what stops this partnership from ending on 49. Last ball of the 68th over by Bashir, it is a drag-down outside off, Pant goes for a big pull shot and miscues it completely. It goes up in the air but it is well out of Zak Crawley's reach who runs back from midwicket. 

Pant has been as watchful as any batter could ever be so far and then that shot comes out of nowhere. He is still in there somewhere you know. 

Pant on 40 off 96, Gill on 90 off 127 balls. 

India 271/3 in 68 overs

The on-air commentators are wondering if this is the right thing to do against Bashir, with Sunil Gavaskar even joking that Pant might be waiting for him to be done with his stint in the gantry. Bashir has bowled 14 overs thus far and conceded 39 runs. 

What seems certain, for now, is that there is no IPL hangover. It has been some proper Test cricket grinding from the four Indian batters who have faced a substantial number of deliveries today. 

Gill is on 89 off 124, Pant on 14 off 36. 

India 262/3 in 66 overs

Gill nudges the fourth ball to deep fine for a four, something we haven't seen too often in this session. And then a maiden from Bashir to Pant. And well no surprises there as Stokes has a word with Woakes while the latter takes off his cap and takes the ball in his hands. 

Gill and Pant are doing pretty well weathering this late storm from England but there is still about 26 overs left in the day. 

Gill on 82 off 114, Pant on 12 off 34. 

India 253/3 in 64 overs

And it has made the task of facing Stokes quite difficult indeed. Quite a few plays and misses for both batters and a couple of really tight leaves for Pant in particular. Somehow, the pair are still around, weathering the storm. 

Pant on 11 off 27 balls, Gill on 74 off 103 balls. 

India 243/3 in 61 overs

One would've probably expected Pant to be running down the track to every ball that Shoaib Bashir is bowling but he has instead been quite watchful against the spinner. Meanwhile, Stokes is turning it on from the other end as well and Pant is quite lucky to not have been LBW against him the way Shaun Marsh was to Jasprit Bumrah quite famously during the 2018 India vs Australia series off the second ball in the 57th over. 

Pant on 10 off 23, Gill on 71 off 95.

Pant pushes the first ball he faces in this innings to mid on. Then he advances down the track for the next and blasts it over Stokes' head for a four. It was a length delivery around off stump and Stokes bursts out laughing after that, he also has a few words with Pant who doesn't seem to be in the same jovial or talkative mood. A single to end that over. 

Pant on five off three, Gill on 63 off 79 balls.

He sends this one right through Jaiswal's gates, a special delivery to end a special knock. Third ball of the 53rd ball, length delivery that lands on off stump and straightens. It goes between Jaiswal's bat and body and smashes onto his stumps.

Shoaib Bashir to bowl the first over after Tea. Shubman Gill on strike and he is on 58 off 74, Jaiswal on 100 off 155. England need to break this partnership as early as possible or they could have a real mountain to climb. 

Stokes bowls the last over before Tea and this time, India don't lose any wickets before close of play. If anything, England are the unlucky ones as the fifth ball of that over from Stokes had Jaiswal nicking to second slip. It was short though and moreover, the fielder Brook ends up palming it onto the helmets behind the wicketkeeper. That gives India five penalty runs. 

Jaiswal ends the session on 100 off 154 balls, he walks off to a standing ovation. Gill on 58 off 74. The partnership between the pair has produced 123 runs in 155 balls for India. 

India 215/2 in 51 overs

He blasts fours off consecutive balls after getting that treatment and then takes a single to get to the mark. What a knock this is from Jaiswal! Jaiswal cuts the fourth ball through point for four and then drills the fifth one through covers for another. He then taps the last ball away for a single and then raises his arms, takes off his helmet and jumps in pure ecstacy.

He swings hard at the second ball of that over and misses and then he drops the bat straightaway. The physio comes out again and is putting a cold towel around Jaiswal's stricken arm. Well this is a bit worrying now for India. Stokes has a conversation with the umpire as well, this has been the second long delay in between overs in the last 10 odd minutes. For now, Jaiswal receives treatment and continues. 

Carse continues in the 49th over, the first ball is short and wide and Jaiswal cuts it away with disdain for four. that takes him to 91 in 138 balls and India reach 200. 

It seems Jaiswal is feeling a bit of cramp on his hands. Earlier Gill needed some attention on his back during the drinks break. It is quite a warm day out there today, remember. Nitish Kumar Reddy is helping the physio out with the treatment, rubbing one of his two limbs. 

Bashir has bowled two deliveries to Jaiswal in the 48th over. 

Jaiswal on 86 off 135 balls, Gill on 57 off 71 balls.

And he has brought it up in style, second ball of the 43rd over by Tongue is short and Gill has hours of time to play this one. Gets on top of it and pulls it with aplomb through midwicket for four. An incredible innings from the Indian captain so far. Gill on 51 off 56 balls. 

Short outside off from Tongue to finish the 41st over, Jaiswal cuts it over point and all the way for the first six of this match! That is some shot there, pure timing as Jaiswal read Tongue's short ball like a book. 

He has moved to 78 in 102 balls, Gill on 42 off 48. 

India 172/2 in 41 overs

And he has been brought on by Stokes in the 40th over. Jaiswal is on strike, slip and leg slip in place. The partnership between these two is on 67 off 82 balls. 

Indian 159/2 in 39 overs

Woakes' first ball of the 38th over is a half-volley outside off, Jaiswal obliterates that through covers for four. The third ball is back of a length outside off, Jaiswal punches it through point for another four. Another back of a length delivery outside off fifth ball by Woakes, Jaiswal sends it through point for the third four of the over. 

He finishes it on 66 off 106 balls, Gill on 40 off 44 balls. 

India 158/2 in 38 overs

In just 44 balls. This has been quite an innings thus far from Gill. He has punished deliveries that are even marginally inside his range. The partnership between these two has gone past 50 in 71 balls now. 

There it is! 11th Test half-century for Jaiswal and this one comes in his very first Test innings in England. He has had to go through the gears here, getting off to a swift start and then keeping the scoring rate for much of the first session but hunkering down since Lunch. Jaiswal on 50 off 96 balls, Gill runs two off the last ball and he is on 33 off 36 balls. 

India 135/2 in 35 overs

Woakes finishes the 34th over with a full delivery outside off, Gill rocks back and sends it straight down the ground for four. Holds the pose for good measure as well. An absolute beauty there from the Indian captain and he is racing along here.

India 132/2 in 34 overs

He has played out 88 balls today and scored 46 runs. Jaiswal has been a little more careful in this second session than in the first, certainly no ramp shots attempted yet in the second session. He is on 46 while Gill at the other end on 14 off 20. The two batters have looked quite good thus far, similar to what was the case for Rahul and Jaiswal in the first. 

Woakes continues in the 32nd over now.

Two runs for Gill off Carse's fifth ball of the 29th over takes India into three figures. Gill then slashes at the last ball and sends it past backward point for a four. It has been a good start to the innings for the Indian captain. 

Gill is on 12 off 17, Jaiswal on 43 off 77. 

India 105/2 in 29 overs

Shubman Gill to face his first ball as India captain, Ben Stokes continuing in the 26th over. Jaiswal at the other end on 42 off 74. Here we go!

Rahul and Jaiswal did go for a few rather adventorous throughout that session but they arguably balanced it off perfectly with caution to make it look like they were largely untroubled. And then, with just minutes to go for Lunch, Rahul reached out for one way outside off stump. And then Jaiswal decided to get Sudharsan on strike first ball of the next over which was always going to be the last of the session and exposed the debutant. 

Lalith Kalidas says that Sudharsan is the first Indian specialist top-7 batter in 15 years since Wriddhiman Saha in 2010 to fall for a duck in his maiden innings on Test debut.

Is the fourth highest for India in the first innings of a first Test in an away tour. Above them is the 117-run stand between Rahul and Mayank Agarwal against South Africa in Centurion in 2021. Virender Sehwag and Aakash Chopra's 160-run stand against Pakistan in Multan in 2004 comes second while Murali Vijay and Shikhar Dhawan's 283-run stand against Bangladesh in Fatullah in 2015 leads the way. 

And just like that, England have snuck back in and walk into the dressing room the happier of the two sides. India have to somehow remember the fact that this is still a very good score to finish the first session on in a Test match at Headingley. The new christened captain Shubman Gill is probably going to be walking out with Yashasvi Jaiswal in the next session. 

Sai Sudharsan strangled down the leg side by Ben Stokes and India lose two wickets right before Lunch! Sai Sudharsan had gotten away with a similar shot attempt previous ball, he missed the flick and it went off his pads. Not this time though. More swing on the fourth ball by Stokes, Sudharsan goes for the flick again and this time, it does take the edge. Jamie Smith with a good catch behind the stumps.

Edged and gone! Rahul flashes at a wide one, takes the outside edge and straight into the hands of Joe Root at first slip. No fifty for Rahul and the opening stand ends at long last. 

Brydon Carse with the breakthrough for England and now here comes Sai Sudharsan for his first ever Test innings.

Brydon Carse bowls the 23rd over, manages to beat Jaiswal's edge with the second ball. Jaiswal takes a single fourth ball and then Rahul meets the last with a booming drive through covrs for four.

He is 42 off 73, Jaiswal on 37 off 67.

This is the first time since 2012 that a visiting pair has survived the first 20 overs of a Test at Headingley. This is probably a better start than India would've hoped for and the fact that England burnt that review shows just how desperate they are to find even a glimpse of a wicket. 

Alastair Cook said on BBC that Stokes may have made a mistake bowling first. Will the ex-England captain be proven right today? 

Jaiswal is on 36 off 62, Rahul on 34 off 66.

First ball of the 20th over is a full outswinger from Stokes, Rahul slashes and slashes hard. It goes over the slips and to the boundary. The next ball is sent through deep third for four more. Two more singles in that over. 

Rahul 34 off 64 balls, Jaiswal on 31 off 58. 

India 68/0 in 20 overs

A couple of hairy moments for both players with Rahul chasing a wide one from Stokes fourth ball of the 16th and then Jaiswal attempting a ramp next over off Tongue. These two have managed to stop these Indians from getting a boundary in these last three overs.

India 55/0 in 18 overs

This is ominous for England. KL Rahul also picking up pace. Tongue overpitches second ball of the 15th over, Rahul leans into it and the ball goes blasting past long off for four. That takes India to 49 and the two batters run three off the last ball to take their opening stand to 52.

Rahul on 23 off 45, Jaiswal on 28 off 45. And well, well, here is Ben Stokes for the first time today in just the 16th over. 

Yashasvi Jaiswal has looked largely unperturbed, the same can't be said for KL Rahul but even his troubles are only comparitively higher. These two haven't really given the England bowlers too much to work with. The first hour of this series belongs to India. 

Jaiswal on 27 off 44, Rahul on 16 off 40 balls. 

Chris Woakes has just bowled his seventh over, having changed ends between his spell. Josh Tongue to continue after drinks. 

Josh Tongue comes in as first change in the 11th over. His fifth ball is a half-volley on off, Jaiswal presents the full face of the bat and drives majestically right down the ground, past the bowler for four. He is on 23 off 38 at the end of that over, Rahul on eight off 28.

Inswinger from Woakes to end the seventh over and there was an appeal from England against Jaiswal for LBW. The bowler himself was not too interested though. Carse then beats Rahul a couple of times with some seam movement and the latter makes a tight leave off the last ball which veered away from him late.

Not as authoritative a shot as Jaiswal's was fifth ball of the previous over but Rahul will take it. Carse's first ball of the fourth over is full outside off, Rahul drives but fails to keep it down as it flew off a thick outside edge. There was no one in the gully region though and so the ball goes unimpeded to the boundary for a four. Rahul off the mark off the seventh ball that he faced. No more runs for the rest of the over though. 

India 14/0 after 4 overs

He got hit second ball as he walked down the track and Woakes fired in an inswinger on a good length. Woakes goes fullish outside off fourth ball, Jaiswal doesn't quite nail the drive and runs two. Full and outside off again fifth ball and this time Jaiswal presents the full face of the bat with a high elbow. The ball goes careening past mid-off for four. 

Jaiswal on 10 off 12 at the end of that over.

There seems to be more movement on offer for Carse from the other end. Rahul had set off third ball after working it to square leg but Jaiswal sent him back. Wee bit of miscommunication but no harm done. 

Woakes to continue to Jaiswal now. 

Last ball of that first over from Woakes is pitched on a length and moving away. Jaiswal offers the full face of his bat with soft hands, because of which the ball stays on the ground after taking a thickish outside edge. It runs down the gap between backward point and fourth slip and to the boundary. 

All right then, Chris Woakes is steaming in, Yashasvi Jaiswal is on strike with KL Rahul at the other end. The first ball of the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy is set to be bowled! 

The two teams stand adjacent to each other with the officials in between and observe a moment's silence as a mark of respect for the victims of the Ahmedabad plane crash. The Indian national anthem comes next. followed by England's.

Both India and England are wearing black armbands on Day 1 of this Test as a mark of respect for the victims of the Ahmedabad plane crash. We can see the Indian players have all gathered by the boundary and a few of the England stars are making their way out as well. The ground is fairly empty but expect it to fill up as the day goes on.

And here is what Gill's opposite number Ben Stokes told Ravi Shastri: "We'll bowl. Headingley is a very good cricket wicket, we've had some really good games here. Want to try and use the early conditions. Been a long time coming, bit strange that this is just the second series but we're ready. It's been mixed, some lads have played county cricket, we've had three days of really good cricket. Usual suspects in the top seven, Woakes, Brydon, Bashir, Tongue and myself make up the bowling."

So here is a gist of what Shubman Gill said in his first toss as India's Test captain: "Would've bowled first as well, might be a bit tough in the first session but it should be good to bat on later. Sun is out, should be a good batting deck for us. Preperation has been amazing, we played a practice game in Beckenham, lads are feeling great. Sai makes his debut, Karun comes in. Sai will bat at three."

Ben Stokes doesn't hesitate even for a second before saying that England are bowling first today. Shubman Gill says that he would've bowled first as well. 

All right, we have our first glimpse of Shubman Gill on the field in his Test blazer. Ben Stokes is with there and Ravi Shastri is ready to make the ground shake with his voice. 

Bazball was the buzz word before England toured India in the last Test series played between the two sides. Pretty quickly though, Yashasvi Jaiswal took over all the conversations in the series as the runs came in heaps off his bat. He scored a whopping 712 runs in the series at an average of 89.00 with two centuries and three half-centuries. Those two centuries were both double hundreds that came in consecutive Tests - in the first innings in the thriller in Visakhapatnam and the second innings in Rajkot. He showed in Australia that he can excel in foreign conditions as well and so it will be really interesting to see how he adapts to opening in England.
