(AP Photo/Rafiq Maqbool) A new ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup record was created on Tuesday in Hyderabad as Pakistan chased down 345 against Sri Lanka with 10 balls and six wickets to spare.
With Mohammad Rizwan and Abdullah Shafique scoring centuries, Pakistan overhauled Sri Lanka’s 344/9 in the penultimate over. Pakistan’s 345/4 in 48.2 overs is now the highest successful run-chase in the history of the tournament.
The previous record was held by Ireland, who had famously beaten England in Bengaluru at the 2011 World Cup, led by what many believe to be one of the best World Cup knocks, played by Kevin O’Brien.
Third on the list now is Bangladesh’s win against Scotland in 2015, when Tamim Iqbal led the run-chase of 319 after Kyle Coetzer’s 156 earlier. Incidentally, Bangladesh also have the fourth-best entry in the list, this was Shakib Al Hasan’s turn to score an unbeaten century against West Indies in the 2019 edition.
For the record, India’s best run-chase in the history of ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup is below 300, when Suresh Raina starred in the match against Zimbabwe in Auckland, in 2015.
