PV Sindhu pulls out of Badminton Asia Mixed Team Championships due to hamstring issue

Sindhu said she felt a twinge in her hamstring during training in Guwahati. India had won bronze at the last edition of BAMTC.

PV Sindhu announced on Sunday that she had to withdraw from India’s squad for the Badminton Asia Mixed Team Championships to be played in Qingdao, China, from February 11-16. Sindhu said she picked up a hamstring niggle during a team training camp at the National Centre of Excellence in Guwahati from, that will take longer to heal than she hoped for.

“It is with a heavy heart that I share I won’t be traveling with the team for BAMTC 2025,” Sindhu said in a social media post on Sunday morning. “While training on the 4th in Guwahati, I felt a twinge in my hamstring. Despite my efforts to push through with heavy taping for our country, an MRI has revealed that my recovery will take slightly longer than I initially expected. Wishing the team all the very best. I will be cheering from the sidelines.”

India had won a bronze medal at the last edition of BAMTC, where Sindhu was also part of a strong squad. She was once again expected to lead the charge in women’s singles this time around. But earlier this year before India Open, Sindhu had said that one of her primary goals this year is to stay injury free. “After the Olympics, people ask what’s next or if I’m playing in the next Olympics. It’s important to stay injury-free, that’s my primary goal. We’ll be picking and choosing tournaments carefully,” Sindhu had said in Delhi.

Sindhu – a two-time Olympic medallist, a world championship gold medallist and so much more – had also said she still had the fire to aim for the big medals. “I feel there’s a lot more to achieve. I have that fire in me. It’s just a matter of time and rhythm. Another medal at the World Championships is something I definitely want, along with the All England Championships. We have big tournaments like the World Tour Finals.”

In Sindhu’s absence, the women’s singles responsibility is likely to be shouldered by Malvika Bansod, India’s No 2 currently in world rankings. It is not clear yet if there will be a replacement named for Sindhu.

India have been drawn into Group D of BAMTC alongside 2023 runners-up South Korea, with Macau as the third team. The team will kick off their campaign against Macau on February 12, followed by a crucial clash against South Korea on February 13 at the Conson Gymnasium in Qingdao, China.
