The Karnataka Quiz Association (KQA) is back with their yearly open quizzing championships — ‘Megawhats’, the national team quiz competition, and ‘Mindsweep’, an international solo quiz contest. Slated for Sunday, May 19, both events will take place simultaneously across multiple locations in India. Venue lists are yet to be released, but until then, it’s advisable to brush up on GK, news and pop culture to gain an edge.

One of the oldest quiz clubs in the country, KQA was founded in 1983 by eight quiz enthusiasts. With only 14 members in its initial working, the club conducts over 100 quiz programmes annually today, in both formal and informal capacities. Apart from Megawhats and Mindsweep, their notable events on India’s national quiz circuit include MahaQuizzer, AsKQAnce and AsiaSweep.

Mindsweep is a written international solo quiz, where participants have to answer 200 questions in two back-to-back sessions of 75 minutes each. The quiz will begin from 10.30am IST on Sunday, May 19, simultaneously in different parts of the world. Registration is on at kqaquizzes.org/mindsweep

Megawhats is the written national team quizzing championship where you can sign up in teams of up to four people to crack 75-80 questions. These will be read off a slide deck live, and include audio-visual clues. The winners of the regional rounds of Megawhats will be invited to participate at a national final on June 28, which will unfold within AsKQAnce, the Association’s quiz festival. Megawhats will begin at 3.30pm IST at all venues on May 19. See kqaquizzes.org/megawhats

The questions for Megawhats will be set by Krittika Adhikary, Rashmi Vallabhajosyula, Manish Achuth, and Thejaswi Udupa, while Mindsweep’s set will be by Nagaratna Patil, Urmila Lakshman, Dibyendu Das, Venkataraman Ravindra, and Dr Arul Mani. The latter and Udupa are popular quizmasters who frequently host college and corporate events. “For first-timers,” says Udupa, it is wise at KQA events to “always put down a guess”. “At first glance, it may appear that they do not know the answer…my suggestion is that they read it again a second time. There are always clues.”

Both events will likely take place at the same venue (as seen in previous years), so quizzers could potentially attend Mindsweep in the morning, take a brunch break, and follow up with Megawhats. Past venues can be found on the KQA website. If your city has not had a venue in older editions, you can also volunteer to host/proctor for the first time by writing in to Hrishikesh Varma via the KQA website. Happy quizzing!
