Decks were cleared on Thursday for holding of Assembly elections in Jharkhand, which has been under President’s Rule for the last nine months, with Union Cabinet approving dissolution of the 81-member House.
The decision to approve dissolution of the assembly would be communicated to President Pratibha Patil for issuance of notification, official sources said.
The Union Cabinet acted on a recommendation for dissolution of the Assembly sent by state Governor K Sankaranarayanan to the Home Ministry recently, they said.
In his recommendation, the Governor had said that he felt the state was ready for elections.
Central rule was imposed in the state on January 19 after the then Chief Minister Shibhu Soren lost a by-election and had to resign. Since then, the Assembly had been put under suspended animation.
Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni and Home Minister P Chidambaram, who briefed reporters on the Cabinet meeting, refused to give details on the Cabinet’s deliberations on the Jharkhand issue.
Chidambaram, however, said “consultations are on with the Election Commission. We think, the Election Commission is on the verge of telling us that they are ready to hold elections. “Therefore, the process has been set in motion,” he said. The President’s Rule was to end on January 19 next year.
