Today in Politics: Congress to make people aware of Rahul’s ‘fixing polls claims’ with processions across Maharashtra
Voting for MCD Standing Committee polls; Bihar Congress to protest against state government over lack of job opportunities
Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi (File Photo) Days after Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi alleged discrepancies in last year’s Maharashtra Assembly polls, the Maharashtra Congress on Thursday will organise torchlight processions across the state to draw people’s attention to the “vote theft pattern”, which it claimed indicates the credibility of the Election Commission (EC) is at stake.
Alleging that BJP leaders are responding to queries directed at the EC, state Congress president Harshwardhan Sapkal on Saturday wondered whether a similar “vote fraud pattern” is being planned for the upcoming Bihar elections. “The credibility of the Election Commission is at stake and democracy is under threat. To awaken public awareness, the Congress party will organise torchlight processions across Maharashtra on June 12,” he said.
His remarks come after opposition leader Rahul Gandhi claimed that the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections were a “blueprint for rigging democracy”. He alleged in an article in the Indian Express that this poll “match-fixing” would next happen in the Bihar elections and “anywhere the BJP is losing”.
Sapkal claimed Gandhi had raised the issue with concrete data, but in his one-and-a-half-hour speech in Parliament, Prime Minister Narendra Modi did not utter a single word. “This is a grave threat to India’s democratic framework”.
BJP president J P Nadda has accused the Congress leader of “cooking up bizarre conspiracies” in his desperation after losing a series of elections.
NDA government in Andhra to mark one year in power
The NDA government in Andhra Pradesh will celebrate the completion of its first year in office on Thursday as “Suparipala – Swarna Andhra’ (good governance – golden Andhra), showcasing its achievements and presenting its future vision, official sources said.
The NDA, comprising the TDP, BJP and Jana Sena Party (JSP), stormed to power a year ago, bagging a landslide victory of 164 assembly seats and relegating YSRCP to just 11 seats.
Chief Secretary K Vijayanand said the event will be celebrated at 5 pm on June 12 at Amaravati.
“The Government of Andhra Pradesh, formed after the 2024 polls completes its first year in office on 12 June 2025, a milestone marking the culmination of one year of governance steered by people’s mandate,” Vijayanand said in a Government Order (GO) on Tuesday.
Congress to hold protests in Bihar over unemployment
The Congress will hold protests outside employment exchanges in 25 districts of Bihar on Thursday to protest against the NDA government’s failure to provide jobs and employment opportunities to people.
Bihar Congress president Rajesh Kumar said that party workers would stage a sit-in agitation in front of the offices of the employment exchange as a mark of protest. He pointed out that more than five lakh posts were lying vacant in different government departments. “We want to know from the government when these vacant posts will be filled,” the Bihar Congress chief said, adding that the party would also raise the issue of ‘same pay for same work’.
MCD Standing Committee polls
The elections for two key posts of the MCD’s Standing Committee will be held on Thursday. Both the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the ruling BJP named their candidates for the posts of chairperson and deputy chairperson last week.
The Standing Committee is an 18-member body, which gives the go-ahead for civic services costing Rs 5 crore and above. Due to a tussle between the AAP and the BJP, its formation was in limbo since the December 2022 MCD elections. However, this week, with the election of all 18 members, the formation process inched closer to completion.
The BJP has filed the nominations of councillors Satya Sharma and Sunder Singh for the posts of chairperson and deputy chairperson, respectively.
From the AAP, Praveen Kumar has filed nominations for the post of chairperson and Mohini Jeenwal for the post of deputy chairperson.
