Haryana crisis: Cong seeks time to meet Governor

Haryana Congress on Thursday sought time to meet the state Governor in the wake of three Independent MLAs withdrawing support to the BJP government, with Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the state Assembly Bhupinder Singh Hooda saying the “minority” dispensation should resign on moral grounds.

“We have also sought time from the Governor,” Hooda said when asked to comment on the JJP writing a letter to the Governor.

Seeking time for its delegation to meet on Friday, a letter written by the Congress to the Governor’s office said that it wants to present a memorandum regarding the present political situation in the state. It said that a Congress delegation led by Deputy CLP leader Aftab Ahmed, and B B Batra, chief whip CLP, and other Congress leaders want to meet the governor on May 10.

Earlier, JJP leader Dushyant Chautala wrote to Haryana Governor Bandaru Dattatreya, saying the Nayab Singh Saini government no longer commands a majority and sought an immediate floor test.

ED against Kejriwal bail, says “poll campaign not a right”

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Thursday opposed in the Supreme Court the grant of interim bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in a money-laundering case linked to the alleged excise policy scam, saying the right to campaign in elections is neither fundamental nor constitutional. The interim bail order will be pronounced on Friday.

In a fresh affidavit filed in the top court, the ED said no political leader has ever been granted interim bail for campaigning even if he is not contesting polls. “It is relevant to note that the right to campaign for an election is neither a fundamental right nor a constitutional right and not even a legal right,” the agency said. It added that to its knowledge, “no political leader has been granted interim bail for campaigning even though he is not the contesting candidate. Even a contesting candidate is not granted interim bail if he is in custody for his own campaigning”.
