Criticising Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla’s decision to expunge several remarks made by party MP Rahul Gandhi during the debate on the no-confidence motion in Lok Sabha, the Congress on Wednesday accused the government of “denigrating” Parliament.

Congress leader in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said he would meet the Speaker and urge him to restore the expunged remarks, and would also raise the issue in the House on Thursday.

Terming it as “gross injustice”, Chowdhury accused the government of trying to “destroy” Parliament, which, he said, was the “last institution standing”.

He said the Opposition’s voice was being throttled in Parliament. “When BJP MPs speak in Parliament, Sansad TV shows and displays their faces… but when we speak, Sansad TV’s cameras are focused on the Chair 40 per cent of the time,” he said.

“I raised the issue in the House today… what is happening… all this is gross injustice to us… the government is denigrating Parliament, its prestige and majesty,” he said.

In February too, the government and the Congress had a major showdown after several remarks made by Rahul, linking Prime Minister Narendra Modi to industrialist Gautam Adani, were expunged. In all, 18 remarks made during Rahul’s 53-minute speech were removed from the records then.
