NCP should merge with Congress: Pawar associate

The Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party should merge with Congress to save the country from communal forces,a senior NCP leader has said.

The Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) should merge with Congress to save the country from communal forces,a senior NCP leader has said.

“NCP should merge with Congress,” Ratnakar Mahajan,a founding member of the 11-year old party, said in a letter to Pawar.

“Even you (Pawar) have on several occasions, said NCP has decided to support Congress to save the country from communal forces,” Mahajan said, adding there was no reason to justify existence of a separate party.

“It must be accepted that as the Big Brother,Congress has treated NCP with honour,” Mahajan, former chairman of Maharashtra State Planning Board, said.

“I am sure you (Pawar) will discuss the suggestion (for NCP merger with Congress) with party colleagues and take a decision soon in the larger interests of the country,” he said.

“When NCP was formed on June 10,1999,you expressed the desire to create a political culture that will wipe out negative image about politics and politicians among people.

Ten years on,it cannot be said that people’s expectations have been fulfilled,” Mahajan said.

“Though NCP’s performance in the 1999,2004 and 2009 elections was good,it is not enough to reach the broader objective. A mature and experienced leader like you know this,” he added.
