If Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi can field his younger brother Dip Gogoi for the Kaliabor Lok Sabha constituency, then why shouldn’t Assam United Democratic Front (AUDF) chief Badruddin Ajmal do the same?
Thus, even as the younger Gogoi was thinking that it would not be difficult to tackle Gunin Hazarika of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) in a constituency which he has been holding since the elder Gogoi became Chief Minister in May 2001,the emergence of Sirajuddin Ajmal, younger brother of the AUDF chief, has just complicated things.
“The Congress should not think it will be as easy last time,” Badruddin Ajmal said on Tuesday, announcing the name of his younger brother, also an MLA,for Kaliabor. Dip Gogoi of the Congress had polled 3,01,893 votes at Kaliabor in 2004 against 2,34,695 by Keshab Mahanta of the AGP. Rashidul Haque of JD(U),who was backed by the BJP,had polled 1,25,966 votes.
This time however, with the BJP supporting the AGP,the regional party is expecting a transfer about one lakh more votes to its side,at the same time also hoping that Sirajuddin Ajmal (AUDF) would slice away a considerable portion of Muslim votes from the Congress. Kaliabor has about two lakh Muslim voters.
“My brother is an intelligent person. He is not there just because he happens to be my brother,” said Gogoi, claiming that the Congress did not consider Gunin Hazarika (AGP-BJP) or Sirajuddin Ajmal (AUDF) as major threats.
