Gandhi’s statement on criminals in politics bold: Sachar

Welcoming the remarks of Congress chief Sonia Gandhi on preventing criminals from contesting polls,former Delhi High Court Chief Justice Rajindar Sachar on Wednesday said that it was a “whiff of fresh air in the murky game of politics”.

He also said it was a “bold” statement considering that at present there are 153 MPs who have criminal cases pending against them,of which 74 are accused of robbery and murder.

“The clarion call of Sonia Gandhi that she wanted to prevent individuals with criminal record from contesting polls is a “whiff of fresh air in the murky game of politics”,he said in a statement here.

“Surely this is a modest beginning which must be put into effect immediately to keep faith of the common man in our election process,which is the bedrock of democracy,” he added.

At the diamond jubilee celebrations of Election Commission two days ago,Gandhi underlined the need to check money and muscle power in elections and prevent persons with criminal background from entering the poll arena.
