Evening Picture: As BJP celebrates foreign policy wins, Opposition tells it to focus on domestic issues

In Andhra Pradesh, the YSRCP and the TDP continued to lock horns over former Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu’s arrest. While the TDP said that its bandh call was a success, Jagan Mohan Reddy’s party posted images and videos claiming otherwise.

With the G20 Summit wrapped up, the Opposition appears to be ready to move on to domestic issues but the BJP is still basking in the summit’s success and keeping its focus on foreign policy. On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud co-chaired the first meeting of the India-Saudi Arabia Strategic Partnership Council to discuss bilateral trade and defence ties.

In a series of posts on X, the BJP shared messages from foreign leaders who “showered praises on (Modi’s) visionary leadership” through the G20 Summit. In posts with photos and videos from the summit, the BJP called its outcomes historic and said the “world leaders’ deep respect for (Modi is) a source of pride”.

On the G20 Summit, the Congress, however, chose to highlight the government’s decision to use barricades and screens to hide slums in Delhi, saying the BJP was “trampling the self-respect of the country’s poor”. The party posted a video on X that also showed waterlogging at the Bharat Mandapam, where G20 events were held, and stray dogs being rounded up violently.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was also critical of the BJP over its G20 preparations, alleging that the central government did not provide the Rs 900 crore requested by Delhi’s tourism, health and public works departments. The AAP said the Delhi government spent its own money on G20 preparations.

Continuing its focus on foreign policy, the BJP also shared a summary of the India-Saudi Arabia Strategic Partnership Council meeting, in which the countries discussed an “economic corridor” between India, the Middle East and Europe.

The BJP also claimed “the world is backing” India’s bid for a permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council while taking a shot at Jawaharlal Nehru for giving it away to “China on a platter”.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said the BJP should turn its attention to domestic issues now that the G20 Summit was over. The Congress was among several Opposition parties, including the Janata Dal (United) and the Samajwadi Party (SP), to attack the government on its economic record, particularly the inflation rate.

The Congress also claimed corruption was a part of the Modi government’s “mathematics” and shared videos of national spokesperson Pawan Khera’s press conference, in which he alleged there were “irregularities” in the Jal Jeevan Mission in Jammu and Kashmir.

Rahul Gandhi, who has spent the last few days in Europe meeting officials and delivering addresses, including at the Hague in the Netherlands on Monday, continued his attacks against Gautam Adani and his links to Modi.

Meanwhile, tensions continued to remain palpable between Andhra Pradesh’s ruling YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) and the Telangana Desam Party (TDP), following the arrest of former chief minister and TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu in the Skill Development Corporation case. The YSRCP alleged that the case was the latest among many previous scams under Naidu, saying he had “stolen Rs 6 lakh crores … in his 45-year political career”.

The TDP defended Naidu and claimed credit for the state’s top ranking in a 2019 national skills report. The party also posted a video of a press conference with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee who said Naidu’s arrest “without evidence, without investigation seems to be a partisan achievement”.

The TDP said its calls for a bandh across the state had been answered, posting images and videos of party workers protesting and blocking traffic. But the YSRCP countered with its video of peaceful markets and vehicles plying on roads without any interruptions, claiming the people had ignored the bandh call.
