ASP,6 Haryana STF men held for extortion

Haryana Police Special Task Force was made 'non-operational' after seven of its personnel were detained for allegedly extorting money.

The Haryana Police Special Task Force (STF) was made non-operational after seven of its personnel,including an ASP,were detained today for allegedly extorting money from two Panipat businessman. The STF men,it is alleged,had threatened to implicate them in false cases.

Police said seven personnel of the 15-member STF,including ASP Ashok Sheoran,were detained for questioning following serious allegations of involvement in two criminal cases at Panipat.

Panipat SP Rajinder Singh said share broker Rajat Sharma alleged that the STF men demanded Rs 10 lakh after threatening to book him in some cases. Singh said the STF men settled for Rs 6 lakh which was given to them.

Jeweller B K Malhotra alleged that the STF team demanded Rs 10 lakh but he paid them Rs 1 lakh. We saw the CCTV footage of the jewellery shop and our staff recognised that one of the men was an STF constable as he was earlier posted with the Panipat STF, Singh said.

The STF,which was set up to investigate cases relating to notorious criminals,has been made non-operational,DGP R S Dalal told reporters in Chandigarh.
