Both the BJP and the TMC’s partners in the INDIA alliance, Congress and CPI(M), had flayed Friday night’s attack on an ED team, leaving several officials injured. Speaking to The Indian Express, West Bengal Governor C V Ananda Bose had said the incident, in 24 North Parganas District, showed that “democracy is under attack” in West Bengal.

“The Constitution has the strength to establish democracy over mobocracy. The Constitution envisages people’s sovereignty, not party sovereignty. India is a federation, there cannot be a State within a State. That is imperium,” he said.

Suggesting that change was imminent in Bengal, the Governor said: “The people of Bengal deserve peace. They will get peace, and they should get peace. Recent instances show that Bengal is under attack. People are under attack. Democracy is under attack. Freedom is under attack.”

Bose had started on a good footing with the Mamata government and was seen as making efforts to repair ties that were heavily strained under his predecessor Jagdeep Dhankhar. However, since then, relations between the government and the Raj Bhavan have soured.
