On the eve of the trial court hearing on alleged financial irregularities in the National Herald Case, the Centre has decided to provide official accommodation to Subramanian Swamy.

Government sources said that Swamy will be given a coveted type VII bungalow in Lutyens’ Delhi for the next five years. The second highest grade of government accommodation, type VII bungalows, are usually allotted to ministers and secretaries in Government of India. About 200 such bungalows are presently occupied and there is a waiting list of 393 others. Sources said that the hunt is on to find Swamy a suitable accommodation soon since there are no vacant bungalows as of now.

It is on the basis of BJP leader Swamy’s complaint regarding misappropriation of funds that Congress president Sonia Gandhi and party vice-president Rahul Gandhi have been summoned by the Patiala House District Court.

The decision to provide Swamy an official bungalow was taken by the Cabinet Committee on Accommodation on Thursday. The committee, chaired by Home Minister Rajnath Singh, comprises senior ministers Arun Jaitley, Venkaiah Naidu and Nitin Gadkari. Officials said the decision was taken in view of the fact that there is not enough space in Swamy’s current residence for deployment of armed guards considering the fact that he is a Z-category protectee with CRPF cover.

“His security is being reviewed from time to time by Security Categorisation Committee in the Home Ministry. As per security threat assessment carried out by the central security agency, there is a need felt for proper government accommodation for him for effective deployment of security,” said officials who added that Swamy will have to pay five times the usual licence fee.
