A couple of days ago,the world media woke up to the news that the Slum Lord actor has been signed on for the Tom Cruise franchise,Mission Impossible ( M:I IV) . Yes,it is jhakaas Anil Kapoor. While deets about his role are not revealed,it is understood that Kapoor will be playing a bad guy. Other than Cruise,Kapoor will co-star with Jeremy Renner,Paula Patton,Simon Pegg,Vladimir Mashkov and Ving Rhames. The first schedule of the film got over in Prague and the unit will now move to Vancouver where Kapoor will join them. M:I IV is slated for a December 2011 release.
Kapoors meanie game show host act in Slumdog Millionaire and his appearance in the hit US series,24 ,are big splashes in the global scene. M:I IV will only consolidate his star stocks in Hollywood. Of course it all began with the Oscar winning Slumdog Millionaire . To think that he wasnt even the first choice for the Oscar winning film!
The story goes like this: Danny Boyle wanted Shah Rukh Khan to act in Slumdog Millionaire . SRK made Boyle wait for over two hours in his Bandra mansion,Mannat and then politely refused the role. Mr Boyle then went to Anil Kapoor who by the way was totally clueless about Mr Boyles credentials. It was his son,Harsh, who filled in his daddy about the importance of being Danny Boyle. We all know what happened next.
By the way,SRK also rejected Lagaan,Munnabhai MBBS,3 idiots and Robot . In showbiz, this is a ritual. Actors pass on movies every other day. In many instances, careers are made out of those rejections. Salman Khan rejected Baazigar because he didnt want to play a negative character,SRK snapped it up and that movie was his big ticket to superstardom. Karan Johar wrote Kuch Kuch Hota Hai with SRK-Kajol and Twinkle Khanna in mind. So enamoured was he by the thought of Twinkle acting in his debut film that he even named her character,Tina (which is Twinkles real name). Twinkle said no and so Rani Mukerjis stardom came about.
In Hollywood, the most notable nixes include Will Smith who passed on the role of Neo in The Matrix which by the way was also rejected by Ewan McGregor. Cary Grant famously turned down the offer to star as James Bond because he didnt want to be tied down to the series. Thats how Sean Connery got the jig in 1962s Dr. No .
Bette Davis turned down the role of Scarlett O Hara in Gone with the Wind . The role went to Vivien Leigh. Davis decided to pass on the role when she thought Errol Flynn would by playing the part of Rhett. She had refused to work with him earlier. It is said that Bruce Willis declined Ghost because he thought playing a ghost would be detrimental to his career. Patrick Swayze did the iconic role and years later,Bruce went on to play a ghost in The Sixth Sense .
Yes/No is a crucial decision especially in showbiz where one right move can make all the difference in your career while the wrong move can make a difference to your contemporarys career. And if you are lucky, then you might even end up doing a movie with Tom Cruise.
