Last week,I finally succumbed to the itch and bought myself a new phone, the BlackBerry Curve 9300. My old Nokia E63 had served me well for the past two years and in the process accumulated over 600 contacts, hundreds of photos and videos as well as other files. There was no way I could transfer these to the new phone through the SIM and was a bit worried I might have to manually key in all the contacts.

That was when I realised that the new BlackBerry desktop application lets you copy data from any other smartphone, not necessarily another RIM handset. It took me exactly five minutes to get my new phone loaded with all the old files. But it’s now always that easy as not everyone is switching over to a BlackBerry.

There is another way though. Sync your old phone with whatever desktop software that came with it. It will invariably have the option of backing up contacts to Outlook. Once you do this,it is easy to export all the contact to a .CSV file and save it somewhere. Use the software of the new phone to copy the .CSV file to the new phone, and you will have all your contacts back. Alternatively,if you sync you phone to the PC it will copy all the contacts from Outlook.

Those using Android phones an import the .CSV file to Gmail contacts and sync it to the phone. It is anyway a good idea to periodically import your contacts to Gmail so that you have a back-up in the cloud, accessible from anywhere. In case you lose your phone, there is always Gmail to see who to call for help.

Some phones also let you make a bulk file of your business cards so that it can be sent to another phone as SMS,e-mail or through Bluetooth. My E63 also had this function, but I just couldn’t get it to work. So play safe and keep syncing your contacts to Outlook.
