Opinion PC as a host?
It was a 'career first in a really long time' in Priyanka Chopras life. Thats what the actor tweeted when KKK3 went on air.
It was a career first in a really long time in Priyanka Chopras life. Thats what the actor tweeted on Monday when the TV show Khatron Ke Khiladi 3(KKK3) went on air.
A lot of eyebrows were raised when Colours decided on the change of guard for their Fear Factor franchise. Come on,Akshay Kumar was the in Khatron Ke Khiladi. His daredevil stunts were the mainstay of the show. He held the show together with camaraderie with his haseenas ― the gentle flirtation, the teasing, the testing and that beautiful touch of reciting the Gayatri Mantra before every task. The show was a perfect brand fit for the superstar. One wonders then what was the need for the channel to go for Priyanka?
Sure,on paper, the idea of having a hot actress with 13 hot guys must have sounded… umm… hot. Especially since in the preliminary stages, the show was planned with the IPL cricketers. That idea was nipped in the bud by the BCCI. So a mad scramble began for Priyankas 13 suitors. Eventually the channel managed to finalise the guys. Rio as a setting gave the show an exotic appeal. The hype about the show was brilliantly crafted. The fact that it was Priyanka taking over from Akshay was anyways a big deal ― what with all those link-up stories about them in the good old days of Andaaz& Aitraaz. The channel didnt leave any stone unturned and even flew in a few journalists all the way to Brazil to get the-hot-Priyanka-in-hot-Rio kinda page one splashes.
So was it all worth it? Well, not quite.
Maybe the Day One jitters got to her or maybe our expectations were sky high but in her TV show debut,Priyanka came across a tad nervous. She got the look right ― very biker chick with red hair and all ― but as an anchor, she didnt quite make the cut.
Hosting a show is a huge challenge. It is also a huge responsibility. It is all about the host ― his/her personality and how he/she connects to the audience. You cannot blame anyone for its failure because really, the audience is turning in to see the host. There have been instances when a good host has bolstered an average show. Salman Khan, for example. By all means,as a show,10 ka Dumwas nothing extraordinary but Salmans spontaneity and connect with his audience made it fun to watch. Ditto in the case of the first season of Kaun Banega Crorepati(KBC) ― a show that reinvented Amitabh Bachchan. The nation tuned in to see what Amitabh Bachchan was really like. The success of KBC was the success of Bachchan. And vice versa.
Priyanka on the other hand is struggling with this aspect. In the two episodes so far,Priyankas personality appears repressed. Quite strange since as a person,PC (as she is affectionately called in the industry) is very vivacious. On KKK3,she is too toned down. She has the smart lines but shes not delivering them with panache. Priyanka seems a little lost ― as if shes looking around for Vishal Bhardwaj to handhold her, give her the filmy lines so that she can play a role.
Television hosting, alas,is not about playing a character. For KKK3 to click and for Priyanka to fill in the large shoes of her predecessor, she needs to let her irrepressible personality come all out. Otherwise,it just seems as if shes merely presenting the show as opposed to anchoring it.
There are just 16 episodes,so she better hurry up.
